Porgorag

Porgorag is a major port city on the northern edge of the Queendom of Keeleon. It is located in the Northern Orcish Plains region of Tarteria. It is a bustling port and was the northern focal point of the country's regrowth in the Fifth Age.

Description

The city of Porgorag was founded in 5A 005 by the Zenethian Hero Grupe, the Monster Hunter, to facilitate incoming resources and to fortify the needed trade roads through the country. It is situated on the coast of the Leviathan Sea, and it commonly sees incoming vessels from the Santeem Republic and those from the Kingdom of Endor and farther afield looking for cheaper docking dues than those found in Port Haville.   It functioned as a focal point for the Hero Grupe and his efforts in Tarteria. Though eventually his efforts shifted towards the west, his influence can be seen in many aspects of the city. A huge memorial statue of Grupe stands at the southern entrance to Porgorag, overlooking the Orc Highway as it runs southwards from the city.   The city is made of a variety of buildings of differing designs and makes, which at a distance makes a mosaic of colors and shapes.   The city was named after Grupe's father, the Zenethian Champion Porgorag, Wielder of the Zenethian Hook and Chain.

The Docks

The docks of Porgorag are dedicated to the incoming and outgoing vessels of the city, including those for mercantile, military, and civilian purposes. Many storage warehouses dot the coastline and groups of workers travel to and from the various sets of docks jutting into the Leviathan Sea. There are three main sets of docks.
  • Moss Docks: The Moss Docks in the west are small scale, used primarily by independent fishermen and other small crafts.
  • Darksteel Foundry: The Darksteel Foundry consists of docks, a smelter, smithy, and trade goods store run by the Hands of Ore. The enclosed facility also features a small household and furnishings to support the guildmembers operating here.
  • Yellow Quay: The Yellow Quay is the main military complex of the settlement, housing the region’s Keel's Band soldiers and the northern ships of the Keel’s Navy, docked on the stonework quays in the coast.

City Center

The City Center district is the oldest part of the city. It is centered around Porgorag Plaza and is the center of government, religion, and culture in Porgorag.
  • Church of Zenethia: This church is one of the oldest structures in the city. Inside the large structure are statuary depictions of each of the Zenethian Heroes that saved this land.
  • Porgorag Plaza: Porgorag Plaza is a bustling brick-laid plaza at the heart of the city. At the center is a green and gold sundial.
  • Oknar Offices: The Oknar Offices is the governor’s place of work, where city problems can be resolved and issues raised. Here also are the offices of the various appointed positions under the governor.
  • Second Square: Second Square is smaller than the Porgorag Plaza, but is dominated by the stalls and carts of travelling merchants and caravans hawking their goods to the populace.

Eastfield

Eastfield houses most of the diverse residency of the city and represents the merchant class housing, as well as those with better means. The building styles in the Eastfield district are more varied, and Endor orcs tend to find more familiarity here than in the more traditional side of Westfield. A section of the roadway has several speciality shops on it, forming a small shopping area called Voltha's Walk.
  • Quayside Stables: Quayside Stables are near to the Yellow Quay, hence the name. The mounts here tend to be of higher quality or military grade mounts.
  • First Mountain Jewels: First Mountain Jewels is a jewelry shop in the Eastfield shops. Though their products are of good quality, not many full orcs patronize the business.
  • Pages for Ages: Pages for Ages is a small, but well-stocked bookstore, specializing in fiction and catalogues of cultural stories.
  • Cloak and Trident: Cloak and Trident is a recent addition to the Eastfield shops. They are a purveyor of magical goods and trinkets, however their stock is not well varied and they have experienced problems getting more supply secured.
  • Nerull's Fane: Nerull’s Fane is on the edge of the city, and is a shrine dedicated to Nerull, The Scythe-Bearer. Here, burial rites are performed by the Acolytes of Nerull.
  • Golden Stables: The Golden Stables on the south side of the city harbor more run-of-the-mill mounts, usually used for travel along the Orc Highway. Though reliable, they are cheaper as well, which usually means that it’s harder to come by larger numbers of mounts.

Westfield

Westfield houses an almost entirely orcish population. Unfortunately, it is also viewed by most as the more run-down part of town, where the street cobbles fade to packed dirt. The region carries a reputation (a reputation that is both earned and unjust in varying degrees). Businesses in the area are harder pressed to draw patrons from other parts of the city.
  • Yew Well: A yew tree was planted by followers of Gaia, The Allmother, to mark the founding of Porgorag and to honor the orcs connection to the community needed to rebuild the country. When the tree grew, it began to spout clear water from a knot in the trunk. Seen as a sign of Gaia’s favor, a well surrounding the tree was constructed, offering clean and clear water to any who need it.
  • Yewberry Apothecary: The Yewberry Apothecary is an herbalist and potion brewery. Most of their remedies are harvest from local flora, including the Yew Well's yew tree nearby.
  • Grimm's Goods: Grimm’s Goods is a general good store. Not much is offered to adventurers that they cannot find elsewhere, but these basic (and cheap) goods are needed by the lower-class residents of Westfield to survive.
  • One Ox Inn: The One Ox Inn is a shady place. A dirty bar houses few quiet patrons, and new faces are rarely treated well.
  • Cardinal Desires: Cardinal Desires is a well-known brothel in the region, though many are reluctant to mention they’ve patronized the place. Named for the pink cardinal on the sign, services are provided here for coin.

Grupe's Row

Grupe’s Row is along the southern road of Porgorag and it holds the residences of the upper caste. Many who take the various positions of power in the city hold residence here in gated communities that are patrolled by city guard, as well as personal bodyguards.
  • Oknar's Residence: The Oknar’s Residence is the personal manor of the Oknar, and is protected by a detachment of Queensguard.

The Sewers

Porgorag's sewer system is more function over form. It is comprised of constructed tunnels which angle and lead out towards the Moss Docks. There is not a walkway out of the runoff and muck, and the sewers can become flooded after excessive rain. While the tunnels are regimented beneath City Center and Grupe's Row, the add-ons beneath Westfield are much rougher and unfinished extensions.

Society

Government

Porgorag is headed by a local mayor, titled an Oknar. This Oknar maintains the city’s appointments for head of the city guard and enforcer of laws (watchguard), the regional military (warguard), the local commerce and relations with the trade guilds (coinguard), and religious affairs (godsguard).   Matters of discussion are brought directly before the Oknar. Though, if it is needed or they are called upon, the Oknar, along with other appointed Oknar's of the Northern Orcish Plains, report back to the leader of New Keeleon, caled a Nalt Oknar.   There are no courts in the traditional sense like one would find in the Kingdom of Endor or the Santeem Republic. Cases are brought to the head of that section of government, or to the local lord over the city directly. The decisions are made by them solely, and are absolute. It is rare for a case to be brought further than local leadership.
Government Appointments
  • Oknar: Oknar Jod, son of Anzuk
  • Watchguard: Watchguard Inzun, daughter of Drab
  • Warguard: Warguard Ghuzzakk, son of Ugral

Demographics

The population is mostly orc but the city supports a wide array of races and populations that come with trade and the merchant guilds. The city sees much traffic from the Orc Highway.

Economy

The city imports a number of crops, including wheat, maize, and soybeans, from Bridon Tillage. In times of crisis, they also were able to import barrels of fresh water from Port Haville.

History

The Fifth Age: The Age of Beginnings
5A 005
In 5A 005, Grupe, the Monster Hunter, founded the city of Porgorag to facilitate incoming resources and to fortify the needed trade roads through the country. After the city was founded, it is said Joseppe, the Shadow Mage, planted the Yew Tree as a blessing.   At some point, Grupe left the city of Porgorag and went to the west.   5A 349
In 5A 349, Romsca, Smelter of Ingots, was transferred to the Darksteel Foundry and began to work there.   5A 352
On 31 Madaet 5A 352, Romulus arrived at Porgorag. There, he met Romsca, Smelter of Ingots, and went to the Darksteel Foundry. That evening, in the courtyard of the Foundry, the pair would fight against creatures that came up from the city's sewers.   On 1 Adroth 5A 352, the Santeem Republic aid caravan arrived at the Darksteel Foundry on the Provideniye, as did the Amarth'rilain. Kelwin's Magical Toys and Concocted Wonders arrived in town as well.   On 3 Adroth 5A 352, the party entered the sewers of Porgorag and reached the sunken Spring of the Natant Yew. Inside, they fought several Maw Demons and prevented the completion of a spell circle being cast by a pair of Bulezau.   Later on 3 Adroth 5A 352, the party had a meeting with Coinguard Gim Gorod at the Glistening Hog Tavern, where they tricked him into revealing his illicit intentions in front of the hidden Watchguard. As he tried to flee, the party captured him and handed him over to the Watchguard for questioning.   On 4 Adroth 5A 352, the Provideniye, which carried Kelwin's Shop, departed the city sailing northwards in the direction of the Santeem Republic. The Lightbringers escorted the Santeem aid caravan out of town southwards via the Orc Highway.   By 8 Adroth 5A 352, the vacant coinguard position previously held by Gim Gorod had been filled by Borscha Brickwell.   At some point after 13 Adroth 5A 352, part of Bridon Tillage's bountiful harvest was requisitioned for the Westfield district by Lord Lortuk, son of Mog.
