Wahkohtowin (Wah-koh-toh-win)
An Atsilv Aniyvwiya Community
Wahkohtowin is a serene community nestled on the expansive plains of Tir na nOg. The land here is vast and open, framed by distant rolling hills and punctuated by a network of sparkling rivers that weave through the terrain. The community is small, comprising about two dozen families, all of whom share a strong sense of kinship and mutual support which is reflected in their daily lives and traditions.
The homes in Wahkohtowin are a harmonious blend of traditional and natural architecture, constructed primarily from materials sourced directly from their surroundings. The structures are mostly round or oval, inspired by the traditional tipi and earth lodge designs, which help resist the strong winds that sweep across the plains. Each home features walls of compacted earth and thatched roofs made from the tall, wild grasses that grow abundantly in the area. Large, communal spaces are central to the layout of the village, emphasizing the community's value on togetherness and cooperation.
Inside, the homes are decorated with handcrafted items that reflect the cultural heritage of the Cree, Navajo, and Cherokee peoples. Wooden carvings, woven textiles, and painted pottery add warmth and color, telling stories of the community's ancestry and the natural world that sustains them. Wahkohtowin is not just a place of residence but a living testament to the resilience and creativity of its people, who thrive by adapting to the mystical yet challenging environment of Tir na nOg. The community embodies a lifestyle that respects the past while continuously evolving to meet the present and future needs of its members.
