The Broken Tankard

"Many inns fill up the Ring Road, but none seem to attract travellers quite like the Broken Tankard. This establishment has been in the Poltaga family for ages, filling patrons with spirit and spirits. While the food and drink itself may leave something to be desired, the atmosphere of that place is always warm and welcoming to people from all over the world. It's not unusual to find a travelling troupe of musicians or an adventuring band in that inn, and the stories they tell can last for hours."   ~ The City of Cities

Purpose / Function

The Broken Tankard is first and foremost a lodging for the rough-and-tumble sorts of travellers and adventurers, and the inclusion of a bar and food preparation was very much an afterthought.

Architecture

The building stands some four stories tall, not counting the cellar, and is built of a strong grey stone with large pale wooden supports. The highest level is pure wood, and shuttered windows mark the location of various rooms.   All but the lowest of these floors is taken up by rooms and toilets. Some of these rooms, unlike many inns, contain four beds instead of the usual two, although these rooms are reserved for travelling companies and charge a premium. The bottom level is the tavern, and it has a fireplace and lots of seating from the locals who drink and carouse here as well as the parties of travellers who rent the rooms above. Underneath this is the cellar where various foodstuffs and drink are stored, as well as the main kitchen.

History

The building was built in the years after the Red Rose War, when the armies of the Empire began to return from the front and many turned to mercenary and adventuring work to get by. The building has always been owned by the Poltaga family ever since then, with Séran Poltaga being the latest in a long line.
