Sheernobb

Nestled between sizable acreages of rural farmland and the forest of the Gnarley, a sprawling settlement is suddenly revealed as you approach. It is only understandable that you could not see it easily from the road, as the folk of the settlement do not live in houses of wood or brick, but in burrow-holes found in a hillside overlooking a pond providing water to the gardens of the hill’s inhabitants. Every bolthole home is secured with a door, all idiosyncratic and hand-tooled, fitted with glazed peek-windows, and sized not for humans but for diminutive gnomes. The stoves of each home connect to smokestacks peeking out of the far side of the hill in a demonstration of ingenuity. To be sure, there are small buildings here and there in the center of the village itself, shops and taverns and even an inn with a bard for visitors, but those who are not fully engaged in trade or camaraderie are in their homes, enjoying their creature comforts as the bantam gnomes are wont to do.
Nestled between the rural farmlands and the Gnarley Forest, Sheernobb is a hidden gem of a village, primarily inhabited by Gnomes. Known for its unique subterranean homes and a community that blends seamlessly with nature, Sheernobb offers a picturesque and harmonious lifestyle. This article explores the village's description, history, society, and key figures.

Description

As you approach Sheernobb, the sprawling settlement suddenly reveals itself. The village's homes are not easily visible from the road as they are built into the hillside, resembling burrow-holes with idiosyncratic doors, each fitted with glazed peek-windows and chimneys peeking out from the hilltop. Small buildings like shops, taverns, and an inn dot the village center, catering to trade and visitors.

History

Founding
Sheernobb was founded by the Keeleene family long before the Suloise Suel migration, when gnomes shared the realm with the Elves of Greyhawk. The Keeleene Family, known for their gem-cutting skills, played a significant role in the village's prosperity.
Key Historical Events
  • Hateful Wars: The Gnomes of Sheernobb contributed warriors and spellcasters to this significant conflict.
  • The Battle of Emridy Meadows: Gnomes from Sheernobb fought bravely in this historic battle.
  • Giant Raids: The village has successfully defended against giant attacks originating from the Gnarley Forest.

Society and Culture

Demographics
The village is primarily inhabited by Forest Gnomes, with Rock Gnomes residing in the village proper. A small number of humans also live among the gnomes, contributing to the village's diverse culture.
Community Structure
  • Common People: Miners, hunters, and craftspeople.
  • Merchants: Hold significant economic power, often considered gnomish nobility.
  • Middle Class: Includes teachers, clerks, farmers, shepherds, and minor officials.
Religious Practices
The Gnomes of Sheernobb worship a pantheon led by Garl Glittergold, the deity of trickery, wit, and wealth. Beneath the Moot is the Gnome Pantheon worship hall, a central place for communal spirituality.

Government and Politics

Glennddarc Keeleene has been the Headgnome for over 60 years. Passionate about his village, magical illusions, gem cutting, and his wife, Glennddarc views the villagers as his children, especially since he and his wife have no offspring of their own.
Viscount's Influence
Sheernobb was previously garrisoned by the Viscount's forces, with a small keep held by one of the Viscount's Knights and his retainers. However, the Viscount recently ordered the withdrawal of the Mounted Borderers patrols in the Kron Hills and pulled back the Viscounty troops to the Verbobonc, City.
Political Tensions
Relations between the gnomes of Sheernobb and the humans of Verbobonc have soured, disrupting trade and fostering mistrust. The Free Alliance of the Kron Hills of Gnomes accuses the human nobles of attempting to annex and steal their valuable silver and gem mines, while human nobles complain that the gnomes are liars and cheats, untrustworthy in trade. Merchant caravans from both sides face frequent raids, exacerbating the tensions.

Economy and Trade

Industry and Trade
Sheernobb is known for its productive mines, generating significant wealth through gem cutting and craftwork. The gnomes trade their elaborate gemwork for raw goods, further refining and selling them. Salt and industrial metals are highly sought after for barter.
Key Trade Goods
  • Gems and Jewelry: High-quality gem cutting and jewelry making.
  • Crafts: Various handmade crafts and tools.

Conclusion

Sheernobb stands as a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of its gnome inhabitants. The village's harmonious blend of nature, culture, and community spirit makes it a unique and thriving settlement in the Viscounty of Verbobonc, even as it navigates the challenges of political tension and external threats.
