Kemesh Strait

The Kemesh Strait separates southern Kalmasa from northeastern Kemesh. Its eastern end runs into the Atyanta Ocean and its western end runs into the southeastern Torvalen Sea. The strait is shallow and filled with coral reefs, making it hazardous for large vessels. It has thousands of coral islands formed by mangrove settlement and the silt and peat accumulation from those forests.

This environment makes the strait hazardous to traverse by those without an experienced navigator who knows the correct paths to take. Besides natural hazards, the strait is a home for pirates. Small islands and thick mangrove forests makes it an ideal area for hideouts. In recent years, most of the pirate activity in the strait has been governed by the legendary varhani pirate, Tikrit the Bloody. Aided by hundreds of loyal, experienced varhani sailors and warriors, he has established a rough order to the strait. Now vessels who pay a toll are allowed by his vessels to pass unharmed through his territory and even granted an escort for an additional fee.

Tikrit's growth in power has caused many of the sailors and traders to refer to the Kemesh Strait as Tikrit's Strait and treat it as a kingdom unto itself, much to the consternation of the Kalmasan Samraj.
