Oceanus

Oceanus is a former soldier of the Triton Praetorium, an honorary member of the B-Team group of adventurers, and one of the renowned Heroes of Saltmarsh. Oceanus currently lives in Saltmarsh with his parner Micah Pierce and the talking pseudodragon Sizzabiz, both Heroes as well.

History

Early Life

Oceanus was born in 1449 at the bottom of the Sea of Swords. @tritolast names are bestowed upon families when an individual commits a great heroic deed. However, Oceanus was born to one of the few remaining unnamed families and was sometimes treated poorly for it.   As is required by the Triton Praetorium, Oceanus joined the military young and served in it for years. While there, he met another triton, Melos, and the two of them fell in love and became engaged to one another. Tragically, Melos was killed in 1471 when his and Oceanus's squad was ambushed by sahuagin, dying in Oceanus's arms.   Oceanus continued serving in the military for the next several decades until 1496, when the triton became aware of some strange disturbances along the northern Sword Coast that could be sahuagin. However, triton command elected to ignore it, as the sahuagin, if they were there, wouldn't pose any risk to them. Oceanus, angered at this decision and not wanting others to suffer at the hands of the sharkmen like he had, abandoned his post to investigate on his own. However, Oceanus was captureed by the smuggler Sigurd "Snake Eyes" and imprisoned in a hidden room on the ship where he was tortured for information.

The Heroes of Saltmarsh

(See the Heroes of Saltmarsh)   After a few days of torture, Oceanus was rescued by the future Heroes of Saltmarsh, who were disrupting the smuggling ring Sigurd was a part of. Relieved at his rescue, Oceanus offered to join the Heroes in their investigations around Saltmarsh, which he believed were tied to the strange tidings the triton had noticed. Oceanus also began living on the Heroes' ship, the Big Nauti, which was the renamed ship of Sigurd they kept after they killed and captured its crew. With some awkwardness, Oceanus ended up sleeping in the room adjacent to where he had been tortured.   Oceanus guarded the boat while the Heroes met with the Sunny Shore Tribe and aided in their investigation of the Emperor of the Waves. Oceanus and Micah also began developing feelings for one another.   Oceanus was at the attack on the Neverwinter Gala and escaped with the other Heroes, where they then met the Mask, a hated enemy of Micah whose presence nearly caused Micah to leave the group to resume their pursuit, but Oceanus asked Micah to stay and protect Saltmarsh, something that he had already sacrificed a lot to do.   After investigating the Isle of the Abbey, Oceanus helped the Heroes prepared Saltmarsh for an upcoming battle against a nearby sahaugin fortress. He accompanied the Heroes to the Saltmarsh Mine, though he remained outside while the Heroes dealt with the marauding firenewts, traveled with the Heroes to Leilon to drive off the threatening hill giants, and fought with the party a group of sea hags in a nearby underwater trench, where a magic mirror showed the group the events of Melos' death.   Oceanus accompanied the Heroes as part of the infiltrating vanguard during the Battle of the Spire, where he ran into Argos, a captured triton that demeaned Oceanus as both a no-name and a traitor to their people for defecting, earning the ire of Oceanus's traveling companions. After the battle, which was a stunning success for Saltmarsh and the rest of the Dunwater Alliance, Oceanus and his friends were officially proclaimed to be the Heroes of Saltmarsh.   Over the next month, Oceanus settled into Saltmarsh, continuing to befriend his fellow Heroes and make new friends with the recently arrived B-Team, whose membership included Seraphina Pierce, Micah's younger sister, and Ardek Oredelver, the younger brother of the Hero Mogran Oredelver.   During Monster's Eve of 1496, Oceanus was among the Marshers transformed into their costumes by the wizard Gideon Mistmoor. Oceanus was stuck as a human taxman until he and the others managed to break the spell.   When the Mask returned to Saltmarsh on the 1st of Uktar and proposed an alliance with the Heroes to infiltrate the Twilight Monastery , the Heroes began infighting as Micah and Lyra attempted to kill the theif while Mogran attempted to stop them. Oceanus ran to fetch Seraphina, which resulted in the two siblings having an explosive arguement about Micah hiding the Mask's return from her as well as Micah's newfound warlock powers. When the Heroes decided to take the Mask up on their offer, with the plan to betray them later, Oceanus stayed in Saltmarsh, believing that Micah's obsession was the Mask was unhealthy and he refused to support it.   While the Heroes were gone, Oceanus attempted to cheer up Sera by taking the B-Team on a quest to find some missing lizardfolk in the Mere of Dead Men. While the group did disrupt a burgeoning cult of Myrkul, Sera, who hated the swamp, was no less upset.   After the Heroes returned, Oceanus rejoined them during their investigation of Firewatch Island and accompanied them into the Elemental Plane of Fire when they were summoned by Necian Arrzen's father. He also remained behind in Saltmarsh while most of the Heroes left to hunt the black dragon Voaraghammanthar to retreive the God Trap and was among the group that accidentally released and then later killed the vampire Xolec.   Oceanus then joined the Heroes during their trip to the Styes to stop the aboleth S'gothgah once and for all, remaining on the boat with Krisella Ferox while the others investigated the city. During the Attack on the Neveren Trade Fleet, Oceanus offered to sacrifice himself to fight S'gothgah alone in an attempt to break the aboleth's concentration over those it was controlling through the Banesmark. Though they knew it was likely suicide, the Heroes let him go. However, Oceanus did not die, and his near-death body was found after the attack, as S'gothgah fled before he could kill him once the Sliver of Bane was captured.

Life After the Banesmark Crisis

The Heroes of Saltmarsh were all honored in a ceremony in Neverwinter for their efforts in saving the Great Neveren Trade Fleet and were bestowed gold and medals.   Following the Banesmark Crisis, Oceanus settled into an official relationship with Micah, moving in to the latter's apartment before the two of them, and their collective best friend Biz, built a cottage in town. Oceanus also joined the Mariners, the local town militia, providing some much needed assistance with his military background and knowledge of fighting over and under water.   In 1499, the triton military, upon learning of Oceanus's role in stopping S'gothgah, offered him a chance to return with full honors, even promising to give him a last name in honor of his heroics. Despite this great honor, Oceanus refused, opting to remain with Micah an denjoy his new life on the surface.   In Ches of 1500, while Oceanus and Micah were visiting Waterdeep, Biz was kidnapped by the Mask. With the help of the other Heroes of Saltmarsh, Biz was recovered and the Mask was driven off once and for all, his fracturing mind shattered.   In the early 1500s, Oceanus was elected to the Saltmarsh Town Council as an advocate for Saltmarsh's independent yet welcoming community.   In 1507, Oceanus joined the other Heroes and Krisella in aiding Necian's mission to free a group of slaves from the City of Brass, which was successful and resulted in the freed slaves being teleported outside of Waterdeep   In 1517, Oceanus once again met with the former Heroes to attend the 97th Annual Tournament of Ki to support Lyra's Coldscar Monastery.   In 1519, Oceanus and Micah were officially married in a small ceremony in Saltmarsh. Oceanus took Pierce as his last name.   In 1547, a much older Oceanus was among the Heroes called by Mogran to aid in the Liberation of Nettlemurk Hall, where he fought with the dwarves of Clan Velgrund while his husband infiltrated the stronghold with the other Heroes.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

As a former triton warrior, Oceanus is in remarkably physical condition, able to hold his own on land and in water with a spear or trident, his weapons of choice.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Oceanus remains close friends with each of the Heroes of Saltmarsh, though following the Banesmark Crisis his contact with Necian and Lyra has grown more sporadic. He remains in close contact with Mogran, though, and he, Micah, and Biz have readily taken to being "uncles" for Mogran's three adopted children.   Though exiled from the triton military, Oceanus was offered a chance to return once his former superiors learned of his role in ending the threat of S'gothgah. However, Oceanus refused. Though his record of defection was expunged, Oceanus nevertheless has very little contact with other tritons.

Family Ties

Micah, Oceanus, and Biz have formed an unusual but strong bond in the years since the Banesmark Crisis. Oceanus' levelheadedness keeps the family in check, while Biz's antics and "always in your corner" attitude means Micah always know someone is willing to hear him out. Micah also provides stability for Biz, who has (very) slowly grown less codependent, and Micah accepts and loves Oceanus for who he is, something the triton needed after being exiled from his people.
