NCR-Legion War

The NCR-Legion War is an almost 50 year long conflict between Caesar's Legion and the New California Republic. Despite repeated Legion victories, it still has no clear winner in sight as of 2300, and has resulted in over 100,000 casualties, the largest and deadliest war of the post-apocalypse. Through its 45 years, the conflict has seen many leadership changes on both sides, either through death or resignation. The war is incredibly unpopular with the citizens of NCR, draining innumerable amounts of resources and manpower, and forcing the Republic into corner. On the other hand, the Legion views the war as its destiny, it will either live or die at the hands of the bear, and it is eager to find out which.   The war has two distinct phases, the Mojave Campaign (2255-2281) and the Baja Theater (2282-). The Mojave Campaign surrounded what is now the Free Economic Zone of the Mojave, and was marked by severe economic, military, and political stress within NCR, and the deaths of the Legion's founders. In 2277 the NCR barely won the First Battle of Hoover Dam, but was spread thin attempting to protect the territory from raiders, wildlife, and repeated Legion raids. Eventually, by 2281, the Legion had successfully cut off the Frontline from the rest of the NCR and then bore down on the dam again like a Super Sledge. The Second battle for Hoover Dam resulted in a terrible loss for both sides, as the newly independent New Vegas entered the hostilities, and force both sides out of the Mojave Wasteland. This battle resulted in the death of Caesar and 50,000 Legionaries, and the resignation of the NCR's military command, the entire executive branch of its government, and the disbanding of its Ranger Corps. In total the Campaign resulted in 42,000 deaths for the NCR, and 70,000 deaths for the Legion, and neither side won.   After this loss, both sides reeled back and began consolidating and regrouping. In the Following weeks, Lucinda Bailey would be elected NCR President, and Legate Lanius would be executed for failing to avenge Caesar's death. This would plunge the Legion into a nine year civil war, and it would emerge with Caesar Aurelius as its master. At the same time, Legion and NCR forces repeatedly clashed along the Colorado River South of Nevada, and all along the Gulf of Baja. These battles would be small scale, compared to the massive push from the Legion in 2299.   On the morning of August 4th, 2299, Legate Indolus called up the veterans of Yuma for large-scale drills. This caused the NCR Army and the citizens of Verde to enter panic and high alert. While they focused on the south, Indolus sent his explorers and Frumentarii up the cliff face, and had them deploy C4 beneath the city, an answer to the NCR Ranger's actions in Boulder City in 2277, with lessons from the Courier 's destruction of the Fort. At the same time, Indolus sent 5,000 troops across the river north, near the border with the Free Economic Zone of the Mojave . The Drill in Yuma lasted until the morning of the 5th, then ended and the veterans returned to their homes. Indolus then let Verde settle down for then entire day and the next. Once they were lulled into routine, and went to bed on the 6th, he gave the order, and Verde exploded from below. At the same time, the Frumentarii and Explorers began raiding the town, while the main force advance upon the garrison. The Explosion was more than just the opening, it was also the signal for the rest of the 95,000 troops to begin crossing the river. Within an hour, Verde had fallen, and that morning 100,000 Legionaries marched west, at last standing on the soil of the NCR.   The advance would be halted two days later, roughly 30 miles outside Blythe and NCR Camp Baja. But Indolus wanted this. His goal is clear to NCR strategists, who have no choice to play along if they want to stop him here. He wants the whole of the army in one place, not scattered to be fought at length. Then once he breaks them, he will seize the brahmin fields of Baja, and storm over a starving California.
