Federated Union of Eastern Kalin

Born out of the ashes of a young empire, The Federated Union of Eastern Kalin (usually shortened to "The Union" or "The Federated Union") is one of the preeminent powers in modern Kalin.   Unique amongst the nations of Kalin, the Federated Union of Kalin is a combination between a confederacy and a republic. The Union is made up of several federated states that were once independent nations, regions, or Fallen Cities. These States are semi-autonomous in a lot of ways, but still report to the Federal government in the Union capital of Cam. Further, how these states are represented within the Union are mostly chosen by elections in each State, as well as Union wide Elections. All of this means compared to most of the nations across Kalin, The Union is primarily driven by the will of the people as opposed to that of a monarch or upper oligarchical class...at least officially.   Beyond its unique form of government, the Union is known for wealth of Guilds, Companies, and Unions that help keep the nation competitive on the world stage financially and militarily. Many of the most influential and powerful guilds have their ancient roots in the Guild Compact of Atresa, one of the original Union states, and this has led to many guilds and companies having their headquarters or roots in the Union in someway.   The Nation is also known for its Technomancers, with the Virnos University of Technomancy being the foremost place of (ethical) Technomancy education and learning on the continent. The University, along with its dedicated students have made The Union the forefront of technomanctic and technological advancement both in terms of its military and its civilians. While many nations make use of Technomancers, especially those of the Ordicus Technomantis, none have the same degree of state access to brilliant technomancers as The Union.

History

The Union was born out of the remains of the Atresan Empire of the late Second Age. After the continent shaping events of "The Return," the Fallen City of Atresa, once the capital of its titular Empire, found itself weaker than it had ever been. The Fallen City of Virnos, a recently conquered Puppet State, used the opportunity to unite the various states of the Atresan Empire towards more of a unitary state. Driven by the War Hero and Founder Gareth Pancem, the Union was officially established in 14 3A after much deliberation and discussion during the now renowned "Founding Conference."

Demography and Population

Due to being a conglomeration of older Fallen Cities and 2nd Age nations, the population of The Union is rather diverse. Like most nations in Kalin, Humans make up a large majority of the racial demographics. But not far behind are Half-Orcs, Dragonborn (in Dracon), and Wood Elves. Then there are the ever present Olark, present in any nation to some degree.   Beyond the primary demographics, the nation also has Dwarvish, Halfling, Elvish, and more in terms of legal citizens. The Union does not maintain any form of legalized bias against other races, though unconscious and defacto ones exist, especially against Dragonborn who are often seen as "uncivilized" compared to the rest of the Nation.

Territories

The Union holds control over the old lands of the Fallen Cities of Atresa, Virnos, and Ibrim which make up the States of the same names. These three territories make the majority of its core territories. Beyond that though, the Union also controls the territory formerly known as Draconfall, which is the home of the Dragonborn Clans and constitutes the state of Dracon. Finally, to the north there's the largely Agrarian lands of Rusterra, once known as the Nation of Ghosts.   Due to the Nations size, it controls territory that ranges from the arid blasted lands of Dracon, to the lush fields and forests of Rusterra, with a large variety in-between.

Military

The Union maintains a trained and maintained standing military made up of several service branches. These branches are the Union Army, which is responsible for all primary land-based forces and armies; The Union Navy, which is responsible for all primary sea and water-based forces and the Marines; and the Union Air-Navy, which is responsible for all airships and aircraft related forces.   Beyond its standing military, the Union has and can institute a draft to fill out its armed forces. It also can take advantage of its many Guilds and Companies, which serve as mercenary forces in times of war.   The Union military is known for being advanced when it comes to technology. They are at the forefront of military tech, with developments such as hardened airships, tanks, and far more giving them an edge over other militaries on the continent backed by its strong industrial base. This edge is seen as crucial by Union leadership due to other nations, such as the Unions primary Rival, Tharrisia, having more disciplined and professional soldiers.

Technological Level

Due to the State of Virnos having the Virnos University of Technomancy and its attached Order of Technomancy, the Union enjoys advanced scientific and technomantic levels completely separate from the Ordicus Technomantis.

Religion

The Union does not have an officially mandated state religion, and actually has a plurality of views in its borders; though worship of The Mantle is by far the largest portion of believers. Even amongst the Mantle, worship tends to be split between the Orthodox Church of the Mantle, and the Reformist Supragens Movement.   Beyond the Mantle, worship includes Druidism often practiced by Wood Elves of the Nation; Shamanism and Elemental Spirit Worship followed by the Dragonborn; and often some combination of the two followed by various communities.

Agriculture & Industry

The Union enjoys a wide agricultural base in Atresa and Rusterra which allow it to feed its people with plenty, supported by a strong fishing industry on its shores. It is also one of the most industrious nations on Kalin, tied only (or surpassed, depending on who you ask) by the Impero Tharrisia.

Education

The Union has one of the best educational systems on the continent, with most of its states (with the exceptions of Dracon and Rusterra) having free and compulsory educational systems to greater or lesser degrees.

Legislative Body
The unique nature of The Union makes the official structure somewhat hard to follow.   The Union is made up of 5 States: Atresa, Virnos, Ibrim, Dracon, and Rusterra. Each state maintains a certain amount of independence. They can determine their own leaders, set their own taxes (on top of overall Union taxes), set local laws as long as they don't supersede Union ones, and more. Even the general legislative government of each state can be different. For example, Atresa has the "Primor" as its executive head, an ancient title, chosen by its "Prime Lords" another ancient title that is determined by local election in theory, but is a hereditary title in practice. Meanwhile Dracon chooses a "Clanshead" as its general leader, chosen by the various clans that make up the state.   Beyond each states local government, there's the Federal Government based in the city of Cam. This is where the President, the nations primary "face" and leader of its executive lies, along with the national Senate. The Senate is the primary Legislative body of the Nation, made up Senators from each state chosen by that states government. The Senate makes the laws for the nation as a whole, and the President signs them and can put forward new laws. Senators aren't technically elected, but the President is in a national election every 5 years.
Judicial Body
Much like the legislative arm of the government, the Union has two tiers of its Judiciary. Each state contains its own Judicial body that makes determinations of local laws. At the Federal Level the Prime Judiciary, made up of 6 Prime Judges, make determinations on the laws of the land.
