Red Fang Chapter 28
Torchlight flickered on the slick walls overhead as Toli was dragged along the dungeon floor and dropped in front of a cell. He opened his eyes and grimaced at the pain flooding his body. A heavy boot landed on his chest and a face loomed close.
“Still alive are you then? Good, someone wants to speak to you,” the gaoler said before taking his boot away and stepping back. “I don’t know what you think—” “Silence,” a second man said, and Toli turned his aching head as King Aeld stepped forward, still draped in his bearskin cloak. “I want to know why you did it? I would have rewarded you handsomely but instead, you betrayed me.” “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Toli said and spat blood as he tried to sit up, but the gaoler struck him in the leg with a club, knocking him back down. A sharp pain lanced through Toli’s chest as he tried to fight back, and blackness swirled at the edge of his vision. “You want to play that game, do you?” the gaoler said and darted back in, hitting Toli in a flurry of sharp blows that he was unable to defend against. He curled up against the wall and covered his head.If you'd like to read this as an ebook or paperback, please follow the links.
