The Whispering Caves

by Thomas Tallfellow

After spending the night in the woods with the exiled villagers and guards of Nightstone, fending off an attack by a pack of wolves, the party made their plans for both protecting the villagers in the woods and recovering the villagers in the caves. It was decided that the town guards should remain with the villagers in the woods and the party should explore the caves to find the rest of the villagers. Thomas took it upon himself to spend a couple of hours scouting the area around the cave and gather as much information as possible regarding the cave and any possible guards. A couple of potential stealthy entrances to the cave were discovered, but the party decided the best course of action was to cull the number of enemies in the caves by luring some of them from the cave and eliminating them from hiding positions prior to entering the caves.

Things did not go as planned however. Ruby engaged in dialogue with one of the unseen cave guards, but was unable to convince the guard to exit the cave. Instead, the guard launched a net from the cave, which Ruby narrowly avoided but grabbed hold of. Ruby was now engaged in a game of tug-of-war, trying to pull the guard out of the cave. Jade, seeing that Ruby was not fairing so well in this struggle rushed out of hiding to aid her twin sister. Alas, even the two of them were no match for the other side and they were quickly drug into the cave. At this surprising turn of events, both Prax and Thomas rushed towards the cave to aid their friends. Once they entered the cave mouth, it was easy to understand how Ruby and Jade were so easily defeated at the tug-of-war - the front line guards were ogres! Fortunately for the party, the ogres and goblin archers in the chamber were far too confident in their position. Prax managed to use some divine magic and quickly slay one of the ogres. This unnerved the remaining guards and the party made quick work of the second ogre while Thomas fired arrows at the goblins, slaying one. The remaining two goblins fled down separate passages that exited the entrance chamber.

The party, expecting that the villagers would be well guarded, decided to follow the goblin that screamed for his "boss" as he fled down the passage. After a short travel through the tunnel, it opened into another chamber. At the opening of the chamber, the party found what was left of the treasure they were seeking. The king's crown was severely crushed and missing all of its gemstones. Clearly, this chamber was going to determine whether the party's quests ended in success or failure.
