Arrival in the Dwarven Isles

by Thomas Tallfellow

The sea journey from the giant floating turtle island to the Dwarven Isles was smooth and uneventful. Captain Shivers delivered the party to the city of Little Pebbles. His job now being completed, Captain Shivers informed the party that it was up to them to secure their own return voyage as he wanted nothing else to do with them believing that the encounter with the ghostly pirate ship was due to them being aboard. Strangers in a new land tend to all do the same thing, and our party is no exception. It was time to find a tavern and learn the lay of the land. It wasn't long before two taverns were located, across the street from one another. It appeared that one of them catered to Dwarves and the other Elves as these were the primary residents of Little Pebbles. As they were to meet a Dwarven contact named Maxwell Boulder, the decision was made to visit Brewhaus, the Dwarven tavern first. Immediately upon entering, it was clear that this a high end fancy tavern. Jade was eyed very suspiciously, but nobody was openly hostile towards the group as they made their way to the bar to order drinks and chat with the barkeep. The ale was delicious and served in magically chilled mugs. Thomas asked Dewy the barkeep about Maxwell Boulder but it was clear that the party wasn't yet trusted enough to reveal the whereabouts of such an important person. Even after presenting the king's letter, Dewy couldn't be persuaded. Instead, he offered the party a job to clear out some Fire Newts that were causing the Elven mike workers to strike, shutting down the Dwarven controlled mine. They were told that completing this task would earn them a purse as well as the means to contact Maxwell Boulder. Alas, it appeared even more danger was in store for our adventurers. Hoping that they might be able to more easily obtain information on Maxwell Boulder, the party informed Dewy that they would be back for more details on the job and they proceeded to cross the street to the Dirty Stump.

The Dirty Stump was almost the exact opposite of the Brewhaus. The patrons were all Elves and they were quite raucous. It was a raging party atmosphere. Relying on Jade's half-elven heritage, the party entrusted her to take the lead in this establishment. Jerry Brandon, the barkeep, had no information regarding Maxwell Boulder but was able to explain to the party that almost all the patrons in the establishment were striking Elven mine workers. It was now easy to understand the dynamic of this city. The Dwarves are the ruling class and the Elves are the working class. Needing some work, Jerry informed the party that they could earn free ale for the night and 5 gp for each rat they were able to eradicate from the basement. Understanding that this job sounded too easy, but believing they would be able to handle whatever surprises were in store for them, they agreed and made their way downstairs. Morprax led the way and immediately spotted a rat in the far left corner of the room and quickly speared it. At that instant, an enormous rat burst from a barrel and breathed fire upon the the three party members on the stairs, missing Thomas who hadn't entered the room yet. This was obviously the reason nobody had taken up the 5 gp reward for killing rats. It was a relatively short battle but the party was successful in slaying the rat abomination. Mr. Biggins had survived his first taste of adventuring and the party had now endeared themselves to the elves.
