The Council's Decision

by Thomas Tallfellow

After departing from the meeting with King Baptiste, the party visited Claymore and Flanigan's to pick up some healing potions and replace some items lost during previous encounters. On the way, Ruby noticed they were being followed by someone, but believing it was probably somebody hired by the King's advisor to ensure the party didn't leave the city, Thomas and the crew just continued to the shop. Items were procured at fair prices, and with nothing else to do until a new job could be found, they made their way to the Spirits, the watering hole next to Morprax's blacksmith shop and the place where the party first met and started their adventuring career. Upon leaving Claymore and Flanigan's, the party was still being tailed, but by a different person. Thomas becoming a little uncomfortable with the thought of a different tail, attempted to turn the tables and hide amongst the crowd and tail the party's tail. The new follower was too perceptive however, so Thomas just joined his fellow adventurers for a drink and some planning for what was to come next.

Spirits was beginning to get a crowd, so Thomas scanned the room for fellow adventurers, hoping to get a lead on a job or find out more information about the Seven Snakes. Ruby on the other hand, wanted to find out for certain if Governor Demetre had indeed sent the Seven Snakes to Nightstone, and if not, ensure he was aware they were illicitly using his name to get what they wanted. Not listening to her sister Jade, Ruby just got up, walked out of the inn and headed towards Hightown in search of Demetre. Believing it was a bad idea for Ruby to wander the city alone, the remainder of the group went with her to convince her this was a bad idea and to come back to Spirits for dinner and get a night's rest at Hammer, Inc. Eventually, after roaming Hightown aimlessly without encountering anybody, Ruby agreed with her compatriots and they all returned to Lowtown. After a meal and some small talk with other adventurers, the group called it a night and made their way to Morprax's shop where they attempted to get some rest. Little did they know, someone else had plans for them that evening.

Shortly, after laying down for some rest, there was a loud knock upon the door. When Morprax answered he discovered a dozen city guardsmen outside demanding their presence in front of the council. The party, needing work anyway, felt no need to resist and followed the guards into Hightown where they were led to an unmarked building and taken down several flights of stairs where Tim, the king's advisor Tim, awaited their arrival. It was now, that Tim informed the party that they were being hired to locate and return the Lizard Folk archaeologist Cornelius Dorlan to help get to the bottom of whatever is going on in the Whispering Caves. As payment for completion of this task, the party is being offered a magical rope to help them hide in a pocket dimension when things are getting desperate. Passage aboard the ship Congenial Bastard to transport the party to the Dwarven Isles where it was believed the archaeologist was currently working had already been secured and was scheduled to depart in the morning. Due to the circumstances in which the party were brought before the advisor, they felt they didn't have much choice when it came to accepting this quest or not. Nevertheless, Thomas successfully secured additional funding to offset the return voyage and any incidental costs they may incur on the Isles while in the employ of the crown.
