With the open fight night, still another day away, the party decided to spend their free evening prior to the fights investigating the disappearances that have been occurring in the canal district. They learned that the people disappearing were considered "undesirables", orphans, drunkards without families, etc and that the disappearances began when the party arrived in Little Pebbles. Spending the day planning for an attempt to capture whomever is responsible for this, the party decided to use Thomas as bait with Bob set up on a bridge over the canal with Eebrock and Jade hiding nearby. After dark, after all the activity in the canal district shut down, the party laid their trap. The bait worked, as the mist appeared just as the shadowy figure in the small canal boat made his appearance in an attempt to abduct Thomas. Thomas immediately identified the boatman as the same boatman they previously saw in the canals and also as the boatman helming the ship that attacked them on the Congenial Bastard en route to the Dwarven Isles. Thomas quickly marked his target and loosed a magical arrow, striking the boatman solidly. Unbeknownst to the party, the same vampiric mist that attacked them at sea was with the boatman again. This distracted Thomas, Jade and Eebrock, forcing them to deal with this threat while the boatman sped away, successfully eluding Bob on the bridge. The three party members fighting the vampiric mist dealt serious damage very quickly causing the mist to retreat into the water, becoming indistinguishable from the rest of the mist. Meanwhile, Bob had managed to leap from the bridge into the boat with the mysterious boatman but he was quickly ejected from the boat and into the canal. The boatman was far to fast for the party to put up any serious chase at this point so once again they came up empty handed. Eebrock managed to get a good look at the boatman and recalled some old arcane information about Merrenoloth, creatures not of this plane that pilot boats on the River Styx. They will occasionally enter into contracts and travel to this plane to fulfill them. Apparently, somebody wants to stop the Adventuring Gofers from completing their mission badly enough to make a deal with an underworldly creature to stop them.
