Old Owl Well
A tall mysterious tower set upon a hill. With no enterances at ground level and only a single window many floor up. The stone surface of the tower is incredible smooth and in good condition considering its age. The roof has clearly begun to collapse although trying to gain access to it difficult.
Rumours of an ancient reclusive wizard may explain the tower, however many of the near by locals Phandalin avoid the ruin. Screeching sound of Owl bears can be heard in the area, which frieghtens off many an adventurer.
However one party did gain access to the tower and revealed that inside the former wizard had amassed a great collection of books and instruments. In the centre of the room was a small table with a brass mechanical owl, which teleports visitors to the plane of fire.
History
In −2368 DR, the Empire of Netheril began earnestly colonizing the Savage Frontier. They established several outposts at which Netherese travelers heading west could get fresh horses and supplies. The Terraseer himself identified a perfect spot for one such outpost to be built north of a mineral-rich mountain range not far east of northern Illefarn. However, the area was infested with owlbears, so the Terraseer had his scouts destroy the 3,000-strong population of beasts in an event known as the Caravan War. The outpost was named "Old Owl Well" after the victory over the owlbears.
In time the small outpost grew to include barracks, armoury, inns and the wizards tower. For a time the outpost prospored with passing trade and benefit of the mineral rish area.
However some time around 1360 DR the outpost was desomated. No surivors were left and the evidence a scouting part found was that of a huge Owl bear attack. Wide claw marks and huge fears found at the site suggested the maybe the Owl bears had regrown their population and seeked vengance. The only building not damaged during the attack was the wizards tower.
The site was abandoned and left to ruin. Now most of the stone works have collapsed, retuned to the soil or been carted off by builders in the region. However the tower still stands.
