The Story of the Zenethian Heroes

The History of the End of the Age of Shadow

At the end of the Third Age was the Great War. Long had Zenthai, The Dragon King, stood sentinel against the corruption and greed of Esturk, Lord of Nadiria, The World’s End. But Esturk, not to be defeated again in the great cycle of their conflict, turned towards powers beyond his ken, and by using the Power of Evolution, grew beyond what Zenthai alone could contain.   Esturk wrought great havoc on the world in a century-long war. Knowing he could not alone defeat Esturk, Zenthai chose six Champions from the races of light and from his own heart forged great items of divine power to stand against the darkness. With these six, the forces of the world drove back Esturk’s demons and beasts, and with one final push they defeated the great evil once more and set The World’s End to slumber. However, Zenthai himself was wounded and as a result he retreated back to Zenethia to recover. Thus began the Fourth Age: The Age of Shadow.   Zenthai’s wound was great, and he feared he would not recover before the next time Esturk awoke. His Champions, though gifted extended life, would not live long enough to again fight Nadiria’s darkness. Thus, Zenthai formed a plan with his Champions, and so was spread the prophecy of the Zenethian Children.

Arc 1: The Lands of Branca

“Far to the east of Endor, nestled deep in the mountains, lies a little hamlet with no name.”   Nearly a thousand years after the end of the Great War, six children grew up in a small hamlet in the Gimora Mountains: Trip, Ivan, Grupe, Brigitte, Rath, and Joseppe. They did not know their heritage and only knew their lives in their secluded home and the teachings of the Zenethian clerics, but still their lives were changed on their sixteenth birthday. A celebration had been planned for them, with special presents from their parents, held for them for these sixteen years. But before the celebrations could begin, they were struck with tragedy.   A human named Psaro the Manslayer led an army of minotaurs and gnolls across the Kingdom of Branca to sack this secluded town. Among his forces that attacked the villagers and guards were a black-furred minotaur and an illithid spellcaster. Following the commands of their elders, the children hid in a safehouse behind the waterfall nearby. They were saved by the sacrifice of their childhood friends; six villagers of age with them had been tasked with magic to duplicate the appearance of each child of prophecy, so that should the worst happen, they would be taken instead. Psaro was deceived, and he claimed the six copies for his unknown purposes and retreated, thinking himself victorious. The Zenethian Children emerged to the burned husks of the church and their homes and the butchered remains of everyone they had ever known. From the rubble, they recovered the gifts that would have been given to them. They were seemingly innocuous items, but they were also the last relics of their homes. They took these and set out into the world, vowing revenge against the man that took their family from them.   To the south of their home lay the Kingdom of Branca. Seeking refuge, the children headed towards the castle town, noting the destruction of the surrounding countryside. They learned of the swathe of destruction the bestial army had cut through the land and of the loss of the Brancan army that had tried to defend it. They also heard whispers of darkness emerging on the western horizons and rumors of demons being seen in the world once more. The six met King Alphonse Brancana, who had heard of the great prophecy. He offered to aid the children in their revenge against Psaro, but he could not do so alone; his army was scattered and his country was devastated. He wrote six letters to the rulers of other great kingdoms in Azimuth and tasked them with rallying the kingdoms into a new alliance. King Brancana hoped the words of the children of prophecy would persuade them. Unable to offer much aid, the King did offer a simple cart to the six of them, pulled by a single female donkey named Chedae.   They headed northwards on their quest, and by chance they came across a forgotten, abandoned temple. Inside, they fought through deception and worked together to find three things: a young orcish merchant named Graank, a baby wolverine Brigitte named Fifi, and one of the fabled Zenethian Orbs. This was a Relic from the Age of Zenethia, and once they used it, the six were transported from the Material Plane to the Divine, and on the Eternity Stair, they met for the first time Zenthai, the Dragon King. The great dragon slumbered but still noted their presence, as did the spectral forms of Rita and Ruin, two of the Zenethian Champions.   “Bitches get stiches.”   They learned from the god of Zenethia that they were formed by the union of the Dragon King and his six Champions. They were their offspring, destined to take their mantle and again fight Esturk when the time arose. Though they were the children of prophecy, the time was not yet what Zenthai had predicted for their fight to begin. It was to be many years yet, time to train and gather their strength before facing the darkness. Something had accelerated the awakening of Esturk, and there was little time remaining. Though Zenthai expressed sympathy for the loss of their home town, he conveyed the urgency of their prophesied task. He encouraged them to seek the lost Zenethian Items, hidden in places around Azimuth, awaiting them.

Arc 2: The Lands of Burland

They were returned to the Material Plane, and the six set out with new vigor. They headed first to the Kingdom of Burland. There they found the King distraught with the loss of his son, the crown prince. Though they tried to deliver the missive from Brancana, the King was too distressed and would not hear them. It was the head of the Burland Military, Sir Ragnar McRyan, that accepted it on the King’s behalf. Ragnar expressed the only way he could convince the King to aid Branca against Psaro was to find the missing prince and clear the King’s mind. Sir Ragnar did not want to send them alone, so he tasked one of his officers, Gruknock, with aiding them, and they departed.   Though the bridge crossing of the Ochre River was destroyed by a band of gnolls before they could reach it, the party worked their way to the city of Izmit. Here some of them had a strange dream of a blonde woman surrounded by pink and white flowers, with tears of ruby on her cheeks, and the visage of a yellow-haired man. They heard a single name before waking: “Rose.”   After talking to the parents of the town, they learned other children were missing as well. A voice called to the city’s children from the nearby woods. Following these rumors, they found an abandoned shack with a deep well connected to a cavern system. They followed it and found discarded items and remains of children. Joseppe found an old stuffed bear in the arms of a dead girl and felt the desire to keep this item with him for the rest of his journey. Deeper in, a voice called to them, beckoning them forward. They found a treasure box of enchanted shoes that when worn, lifted them up and away to the west, to Loch Tower.   Loch Tower was the home of a hag who had been abducting the children of Burland. The party fought and defeated her and her gargoyle guards, and learned she had been seeking children of a specific age, equal to that of the party. At the base of the tower, the hag had been bloodletting the children into a great runic spell circle. Though tempted to offer her own blood, Brigitte was persuaded against doing so and the spell circle lay dormant, its purpose unclear. They rescued the crown prince and several other villagers and returned, earning the aid of the Burland King and the permanent addition of Gruknock to their party. They sought the King’s guidance on where to venture next on their quest, and the King spoke of stories of a shrine on the northeast coast in the Wild Lands.

Arc 3: The Wild Lands and Konenbur

On the way to the Wild Lands, the party defended Chedae from a roc attack, and also learned that their donkey could change colors seemingly at will. Unable to determine why, they continued up the coast and found a secluded place suffused with sea spray and saltwater: The Shrine of Breaking Waves.   “Only the child of Porgorag may pass…”   Inside, they faced water elementals guarding a puzzle revolving around the Zenethian symbol. Though Grupe fell, Trip defeated the elemental and sent it crashing to the waters below. Once the symbol was completed, it opened a doorway that only Grupe could pass. It was here the six children learned the gifts they received on the day they set out were the keys to these holy places. Once opened, Grupe recovered the party’s first Zenethian Item: The Zenethian Hook and Chain. The item emanated power, but it had faded over time far from the legendary weapon that had been used in the Great War. It seemed that these items would need to be recharged once they were all recovered.   Emboldened with their success, they quickly started south towards the next kingdom, Konenbur. On the crossing before the desert, they found a curious shop: Grank's Ten-Foot Pole Emporium. The orc they had rescued in Branca, Graank, had safely returned to the shop of his father, Grank. They resupplied and were safely lead across the desert by Graank to Konenbur.   At the city of Anneaux, the party visited a shrine to one of the Zenethian Champions, Angioletta. The shrine boasted housing the famous cloak of Angioletta, but the party quickly determined it was a forgery. That night, the spectral visage of Angioletta visited Joseppe and revealed herself as his mother. She told them the cloak in Anneaux is a fake and told of a land to the east where the true one is hidden. Though Joseppe asked many questions, Angioletta had not the time to answer them. She wished them well on their journey and prayed for their success as she returned to the ether.   Gaia only permits me so much time my son.”   Headed east, the party met a coastal fisherman and bartered for passage across the Rend and for the safekeeping of Chedae and the cart while they would be gone. They ventured to the lost land of Cascada, a ruined country that was lost earlier in the Age of Shadow. Following Joseppe’s burgeoning connection to the Goddess of Life, Gaia, the party reached a circle of mushrooms in the foothills of the mountains. This place was a gateway, and they traveled to a pocket dimension not seemingly of the Material Plane but not quite of Gaia's Plane either.   There was a single stone temple here and inside was a vast mirror on an earthen plinth. A golden frame sat empty on the surface, and through it the party saw a spread of books on the ground; books that did not appear on their side of the mirror. Joseppe placed the spell book he was gifted in the frame, and the mirror became traversable. Joseppe pushed through, but the moment he did the party came under attack by elementals of earth and rock. Each book in the mirror contained a part of a glyph and the binding of his own gift contained the last piece. As Josepppe finished forming the Zenethian symbol from the disparate runes, the elementals crumbled to dust, and the doorway opened to Angioletta’s Zenethian Item: The Zenethian Cloak.   Once they returned back to the material world, the party headed across the short mountains, having heard of a settlement nearby. On the mountain pass, the party could see the far-off Black Mountains of Parthenia on the horizon to the northeast. Struck by divine clarity, Rath remembered the name of Psaro’s minotaur general, the one that led the attack on his home. Rath knew Black Phillip was out there, and he re-vowed his revenge.   “Don’t worry! Sarro with take care of it.”   In the valley before them, a vast orchard of fruit trees surrounded a small village. Though no people were here, there were many animals among the buildings and strangely they could all speak. They talked of the gifts they had received, the woman that they were friends with, and the man who would come every so often and laugh and play with them among the trees. This man used what they called the Power of Evolution to make more friends for the woman. They called this place Rosaville.   At the far end of the village, a single watchtower stood surrounded by a field of pink and white flowers. As they entered, a whooshing of arcane energy activated, but there was no effect they could discern. Inside the tower they found the story of an elf maiden who lived here not long ago. She could cry tears that turned into ruby gemstones. People had long sought to capture her and to harm her, to cause more tears they could turn to riches. She had been saved by a man with golden hair who flitted her away to this place and enchanted the trees to feed her and the animals to be her companions. They spent many years here and fell in love.   But one day, mercenaries that were given her location arrived. It was that day that Rose died among the flowers, and the mercenaries that killed her were slaughtered and sundered to pieces by Psaro’s rage. Heartbroken and wrecked by his loss, Psaro took the title Manslayer and vowed revenge against humans, elves, and dwarves for producing the mercenaries that took his love from him.   As the party learned this, to the north could be seen the sails of many ships. Psaro had been alerted to their trespass, and had sent his armies forth. Quickly they fled back to the mainland of Konenbur and regrouped with their donkey and cart. They fled quickly towards the capital as raiders ravaged the coasts behind them. Facing the risk of being caught by their enemy if they stayed, the party faced the decision of delivering King Brancana’s missive or fleeing to protect themselves and continue their quest. They chose to run, hoping that Psaro’s attack on the kingdom would bring Konenbur’s military to battle against Parthenia of their own accord. They sought passage across the sea and found a black-sailed ship in the harbor. A tall man dressed in black met them and they bartered for passage on his vessel. Once on board, the party was met by a crew of animated skeletons manning the ship. This was the Black Barrow, captained by Leo, Cleric of Nerull. They set out from port and sailed, as behind them Konenbur burned.

Arc 4: The Lands of Soretta

In the seas to the south, the elves had heard of Psaro’s advance and had set up a blockade to prevent the bestial ships from reaching elven lands. The party was blocked from travelling eastward, and so they headed south to the home continent of the elves, Haradren, and the country of Soretta.   In the elven capital they meet the current leader-elect of the elven Aristocracy, who graciously greeted them, speaking of the bounty of the elven lands. The party delivered King Brancana’s missive. The elven leader was non-comital, but spoke of old alliances with the likes of men. He promised to bring it to the elven court. The party also sought information about holy places where their quest could lead them. He told of the holiest place known to the elves, the World Tree, but informed them of elven law forbidding all but full-blooded elves from venturing to the central valley of the World Tree. The party considered their options but Trip suddenly headed east, determined to quickly accomplish the task set before them.   The party felt the most likely place where a Zenethian Item to be hidden would be the World Tree, and they heard rumors of an orc that long ago travelled the elven continent. They could not use the main entrance to the valley and so they traverse through caverns under the Padequia Mountains. Roots from the World Tree had dug deep in these caverns, as its thick roots had spread throughout Haradren. They found their way blocked, so the party set off an explosion with a gunpowder barrel and blasted apart the last rock between them and the elven valley. Ahead they saw the boughs of a gigantic tree and at its base was a city.   The party’s path was direct and they quickly reached the settlement. There, guards stopped them, having seen the explosion in the distance. Acting quickly, they incapacitated and fled from the guards and ran upwards through a winding pathway of bark and bough, around and around into the upper reaches of the tree. Following the feeling of holy energy, Trip led them to a split in the bark of the central trunk, and they slipped inside.   “What do you fear the most? Be honest…”   Inside was a vast petaled flower, made of bark and wood, surrounded by darkness. The party lowered themselves down on rope to reach it. At the center was a carved opening, which Trip found to be the perfect size to accept her gift, a quiver of tanned hide. Once placed, at the tip of each of the eight petals appeared a column housing the handle of a bladed weapon. The party found that when one grasped the handle, their hand became stuck as if attached by some spell. With no other option to proceed, the party split to each petal and each grabbed a handle. In a flash, they heard a voice in their head ask them what they truly feared, and they each drew a shining blade from the stand. But materializing out of black smoke, a figure appeared in front of each, blocking their path back to the center. These creatures embodied the fears of each party member, and only they could overcome the fear they had summoned. A racing fight broke out to place each blade in the center holster, but during the fighting, Gruknock was tackled off the tree. He tumbled into the darkness with his devil and fell to his death.   The rest quickly worked to dispatch their foes and place each sword fragment in the center. With the last thrust in, their fears were banished, and the gleaming weapons reformed in green light into a pair of crystalline scimitars: The Zenethian Swords. The party took the time to carefully recover the body of their companion before ascending the rope back to the outside world.   “Take care of my blades – Mo.”   In the boughs of the World Tree, the party was arrested by the elven guards. They had broken elven law, and accosted Sorettan citizens. They were placed in a prisoner caravan where they met two clerics on a quest from the far-off kingdom of Santeem. The royal family of Santeem had fallen deathly ill, and a chancellor was ruling in the king’s stead, but questionable laws and rumors of corruption were everywhere. The rumors troubled Leo, who was from this far off place. They also met an archer from Branca named Aoth Stormwind. He had been wandering the world in a haze after Psaro’s army destroyed his company and wound up in Haradren where he had been arrested. They all were taken back to the capital, Soretta. Here, the elven leader chastised them for breaking their laws and threatened to imprison them. However, Aoth convinced the elf ruler that as the children of prophecy, they should be allowed to leave this land and fight the great evil for the sake of the world. The elf was unable to deny the logic of it and quietly agreed. He promised to bury Gruknock according to elven custom, but banishing the party, Aoth included, from Soretta forever. They were given permission to traverse the elven blockade, and the party boarded Leo’s ship and sailed eastward.

Arc 5: The Lands of Keeleon

“It is dark magic, things us mortals should not know.”   The party crossed over into the Leviathan Sea and found several bestial ships crashed and sinking along the Radags off the north coast of Tarteria. The ships were oozing a thick tar-like substance into the ocean and as they investigated, they were accosted by another minotaur ship. They captured it and took a sole prisoner. From him they learned more about Psaro’s plans and the Power of Evolution he wielded. It was the same power that Esturk used to alter himself in the past Age, and Psaro was seeking to perfect it for his own uses. They learned he still sought the needed components to complete this, the blood of gods and of demons, and of a ritual from a time before the pantheon needed to complete it. The party also learned that The World’s End and The Manslayer were not allied, and the minotaurs had been stealing orichalcum and some type of black ichor from the Aktempto mines. There was word of demons fighting orcs in the south of the kingdom, and for the first time they realized they were fighting a battle on two fronts: the beasts of Psaro and the demons of Esturk. Finished with their captive, the party slew the minotaur and sailed towards the orc kingdom, Keeleon.   They arrived at Port Haville in the northernmost parts of Keeleon and found the city in ruins with unending storm clouds overhead that rolled to the west. The city had been sacked by demons, and some still roamed the city. Though Trip fell, the party cleared the ruins and revived her, and they rescued an old orc woman that was left behind. Agatha was a seer and foresaw the party’s goal. She directed them to the Fire Spire Sands to the southwest and asked they bring her to the remaining orc forces in the south. Agreeing, the party headed across the orc countryside. They came across several battlefields on their way that were strewn with orc dead. The ground was soiled with the same tar-like substance from the beast ships earlier. It seemed to be demon blood.   To the south along the eastern coast, the party found the remains of the orcish forces. Princess Alena was the sole survivor of the royal family when the capital fell, and she was leading her people to evacuate. The kingdom was lost and she wished to save who she could and seek the aid of other nations. They deliver Brancana’s missive and she promised to aid if she can, though her kingdom’s armies lay defeated. The party learned that some orcs had already fled to the north to Santeem when the northern cities fell. She has heard of her people held prisoner there and asks the parties help in aiding them. She will lead her people now to Endor, the city of the dwarves, to offer what aid she can. The party vows to aid her people if they can, and she sailed away with what remained of her people.   The party’s task wasn’t done and they crossed over to the Fire Spire Sands to seek out their next item. In the desert, demons roamed the sands and the party engaged in a three-way fight with them and huge air elementals. Rath use his gift, dragon scale gloves, to transport the burning heart of the desert to four waypoints to unlock a central shrine in the sands. During the fighting, Joseppe was engulfed by an air elemental. He cast Explosive Runes on the only surface available to him, the back of his cloak. Though the elemental was slain, so too was Joseppe and he fell. The party revived him in the battle, but the Zenethian Cloak was badly damaged. Below the final resting place of the desert orb, a pathway opened up for Rath alone, and inside he found the weapon of his father: The Zenethian Axe. Despite Esturk’s proximity, they did not yet have all the tools they needed to face him. With the best hope of aiding those who remained in Keeleon being the completion of their quest, the party redoubled their efforts and left Tarteria for new waters.   The party headed towards a secluded part of Endor next where the Mausoleum of Dwarf Lords sat. This place of dwarf history and culture eked importance and something seemed to be calling for them from inside, and the party entered its dusty halls. They traversed the expansive interior of noble and highborn tombs and recovered three items from the graves, but they were ambushed by an illithid in the caves, the same illithid spellcaster that attacked their hometown with Psaro. He froze Brigitte and sunk his dagger into her, drawing her blood. They quickly retaliated but before the party could slay him, he magicked the bloodied dagger away. At his death, its form was overtaken by a dark force, and the body of the mind flayer was torn asunder and burned to ashes.   Using magic to speak with the body, they learned Psaro sought their blood and knew the copies he kidnapped were fakes. Before the spell could complete, Aoth interrupted the magic with a holy arrow, interfering with the magic of Nerull wielded by Leo, and the spell rapidly finished. With no more body to use to cast the spell again, they were forced to move on without their questions answered. As they moved on, a dark voice entered Rath’s mind. None noticed as Rath pocketed a single remaining tentacle torn from the face of the illithid during the battle. With the items they recovered combined with Ivan’s present, an old and worn collar of set of clerics robes, they open the way forward to Rita’s tomb and the next Zenethian item: The Zenethian Staff. Now just one item remained. Remembering their promise to Princess Alena, the party sailed forth to Santeem.

Arc 6: The Lands of Santeem

The ship arrived on the east coast of Santeem, at the Grand Bazaar. However, the party faced many different goals to proceed on their quests. They learned of an orc prison camp that the Santeem government had created, alleging the orcs were threatening the country. This reeked of Esturk treachery and they wanted to follow through with their promise to Princess Alena. They also had the missive to deliver to the ruler of Santeem, but with the illness they had heard of earlier and the apparent corruption in their court, they did not believe they could do so safely. Leo, who was from Santeem, wished to visit his hometown once more, to complete his goal and find the grave of his lost lover, Tillius. Rath and Aoth, too, had made needed commissions with the bazaar’s blacksmith and wished to stay to complete these to aid them in their endeavors. With the threats of Esturk and Psaro approaching on the horizon, the party decided the best course of action would be to split up to more quickly meet their goals.   Rath and Aoth elected to stay behind with Chedae and the cart in the bazaar. They worked with the smithy to speed their progress but it was slow going. Aoth’s equipment was finished first, but Rath’s was many hours of work away. Aoth rode out, intending to catch up with the others, while Rath stayed behind with Chedae.   Grupe was most concerned with the orcs and the camp there were being forced into. To give the party an advantage when they would deal with the camp, he alone would scout the prison to learn what may be going on. Deciding the best way to assist could be from the inside, he sent a message to the others about his plan and snuck into the prison camp at night. Inside, he learned of the dire state of things and of an apparent Princess Alena held here. Grupe met the pregnant orc couple Mugarod and Sharn and they helped hide him during patrols while he stayed low in the camp.   Leo, Ivan, Brigitte, Joseppe, and Trip reboarded Leo’s ship and sailed northwards to save on travel time. They anchored off the coast in a place away from the Santeem navy patrols and headed inland to Frenor. They saw evidence of the crown’s corruption and learned of a resistance movement against the chancellor. There were those unhappy with the treatment of orcs, including the mayor and the local priest, Goren, who was an orc in disguise. There was a mole inside the camp and they were working to get orcs out and safely away to Endor. They received Grupe’s message, but they were not yet done. They replied and sent a message back to Grupe as well as to Rath, and they continued on the road to Leo’s hometown of Tempe.   While Rath worked the smithy during the day, at night he was seeking answers to the voice calling in his mind. It was driving him constantly to the tentacle he held and promised him the power to help his siblings and get his revenge against Psaro and Black Philip. He searched for a way to commune with the illithid again. He met an old cleric, Khader, who knew the needed magic and convinced him to perform the spell. That night when they did, the dark presence in Rath overtook the spell, and a demonic voice cursed the illithid for its betrayal and promised eternal damnation.   “Betrayer! Dance like those you command with unlife. You steal the souls I am owed. So now I reject yours.”   While the shadow consumed the recalled illithid’s spirit and all the knowledge it had, Khader attempted to flee. The dark voice commanded Rath to stop him and in a burst of action, Rath drove his sword through the priest and killed him. The illithid was utterly destroyed and the ritual ended, and Khader’s blood seeped into the floorboards of the room. Rath had panicked but the dark presence rewarded Rath for his actions. He now knew he must flee. He ran to the smithy to claim his new armor and asked the smith to join him on his journey. Though the smith did not, his son, Boardud, chose to accompany him. He returned to the inn and quickly gathered Chedae and headed out into the night towards the orc prison.   At the camp, Grupe investigated the claims that the orc princess was here. He found someone that did look like her, but when he pressed them for answers, they revealed it was a magical disguise. An orc name Corthag was impersonating the Princess, hoping to calm the nerves of the orcs held here. He had hoped thinking their Princess was here would mean the orcs could overcome any desire to resist and fight back, which could lead to their execution. Grupe decided that lying to everyone would accomplish nothing and began working to free the camp on his own. He sent another message to his allies asking for their help and began work on creating a hidden tunnel out of the rocky valley the prison was in.   Meanwhile, the larger group arrived in Tempe. It was a grim place, and the party learned that Leo’s lover, Tillius, was the son of the mayor. The mayor, Karth Wheatblood, was a cruel man that agreed with the new anti-orc policies of the Chancellor. He didn’t approve of Leo’s relationship and the mayor had him banished from Tempe. They learned the city was under constant threat of attack from goblins that were allowed to roam freely. They had to give sacrifices to the goblins to appease them and a local girl was selected. Leo found this appalling and offered himself as the tribute instead, hoping that he can follow the same path Tillius was forced on so he may find the body of his partner to give them a proper burial.   As the party spent the night in Leo’s old home preparing, Aoth caught up with them. They all received another message from Grupe, who expressed the deteriorating situation in the prison and the need for urgency. He asked for their help, but Leo could not leave Tempe again. Aoth, Joseppe, and Ivan would return to help Grupe immediately, as they had the magic to quickly travel back, and Leo, Brigitte, and Trip would stay to help Tempe and help Leo accomplish his goal. Those leaving departed, headed into the mountains, and used magic to create a bridge over the Cheriv Valley, heading towards the prison. Those that stayed prepared to face the goblins and protect Tempe in the morning.   As they prepared the sacrificial cart, Trip offered to be the sacrifice instead of Leo. With the cart prepared with Trip inside, Leo and Brigitte followed behind. When the goblins opened it up, intending to bring Trip to their den, they attacked and slew the goblins and their ogre guards. They followed their tracks back to the cavern they had come from. Inside, a goblin shaman had been sacrificing the villagers to some beast, and the bones of those lost were scattered around the cave. The shaman summoned the creature and a purple worm emerged, trying to eat the party. Brigitte almost was swallowed whole, but they slew the creature and the goblins. Leo searched around the cavern, and with the aid of Nerull, found seven pieces of bone. These were the last remains of Tillius, and Leo was urged by his god to use his magic to raise them. Nerull’s blessing took the spell, and the bone shards were transformed into gold. The bone powder and stone of the cavern formed together and created a single stone golem, with seven golden fragments imbedded in it. His task complete, Leo no longer wished to spend more time in Santeem, and they left. They headed back eastward, taking the long route around the mountains to regroup with their party.   It was at this time that Rath and Boardud met Aoth, Joseppe, and Ivan. Grupe began leading the imprisoned orcs through the tunnel he had made, but there were too many and the guards would soon be alerted. The party chose to make a distraction to give the orcs time to escape. Grupe and Aoth snuck back inside through the tunnel to help the rest of the orcs while Ivan and Joseppe distracted the guards on the perimeter with a flying griffon.   “I would like to apologize.”   When the guards inside began to notice the orcs were missing, Aoth tried to distract them by launching a lighting arrow to the far side of the camp. However, he dropped the arrow and drew the attention of every guard within sight. Their cover was blown and intense fighting broke out. Rath and Boardud rode through the gates and attacked to split the guards’ focus. The party fought to give time to the rest of the orcs, and the orc disguised as Princess Alena joined the battle as well. However, his deception was revealed and the orcs discovered Corthag’s lie. The rest of the orcs were saved and the party fled with them towards Frenor.   With the corrupted military ranks of Santeem crossed and no further leads on the whereabouts of the last Zenethian Item, the party chose to ferry the rescued orcs safely to Endor and seek the aid of the dwarf king there to deliver the last missive and learn what they can about the last missing item.   However, the party noticed that Chedae was missing, as was their cart. They scried on their donkey and found her surprising far to the southwest, across the Flat Peaks Desert. Using magic, Joseppe transported himself to her. He attempted to understand how she could have gotten here so quickly and what her destination could be, and persuaded her back and they teleported again to rejoin the party on the ship. With orcs on board, they sailed for Endor.

Arc 7: The Lands of Endor

When the party arrived in Endor, they found a kingdom preparing for war. They went to speak with the dwarven king, Thorik Oathenhammer, to speak on behalf of the orcs they had ferried here. The king was untrusting at first, and descended his throne and bared his runic axe to the party. It was enchanted to detect lies, and once he learned the party’s truth in their intent, he welcomed them and the orcs they had brought to Endor.   The King had set out a call for warriors, and encouraged the party to participate in the Endor Tourneys. The King had been told Branca to the east was preparing to war against them. They denied this, but the King trusted the source of this information, as the messenger had withstood his axe as well. To aid them, King Thorik brought forth the champion of the tournament of swords: Johanna of the Wild Lands. She had earned the title Shieldmaiden for her victory, and would aid them while in the city.   Curious about the tournament, the party went to the arena. There, they found that Aoth’s way in to the archery tournament had already been paid by an anonymous benefactor. Winning the tourney would give Aoth the chance to fight the previous year’s champion. When they inquired who the previous champion was, they learned it was a fighter from Parthenia, and his name was Psaro.   With a day before the tourney would begin, the party decided to search for information that could help them on their journey and point them in the direction of the last Zenethian item. When searching in a lost church to Zenethia, they found old histories kept at the lectern. It detailed the history of the Third Age and the conclusion of the Great War. The final actions of the Zenethian Champions were detailed, including the last champion whose item they needed to locate, Sanazi. She had gone missing in Santeem, to the west of the Flat Peaks Desert. They had their destination, but the tourney and Psaro were too important. They alerted the King and prepared to face their enemy.   Meanwhile, Leo searched the older parts of the city, from when it was first founded in the Age of Creations. Shines and temples to old gods were here, and Leo’s god brought him to a black door. It opened at his touch, and inside lay a pool of dark water. He submerged himself and communed with Nerull, the God of Death. Though the god gave answers for their journey, he too could give no answers regarding Chedae. The donkey eluded his sight.   Brigitte sought answers as well. She had noticed the dark cloud that followed Rath’s actions, and she sought to understand it and save her brother. Her research hinted at demons and darkness. It pointed towards the Blackguards of Zenethia, an omitted sect of the religion, but she could find no answers before the tourney.   The day of the tourney arrived, and Aoth fought his way to the finals. The archer that faced him for the victor’s spot was Duvessa Nighthawk , one of Aoth’s unit from the Branca military. They had been thought lost when the Branca army was scattered by Psaro’s forces. With Aoth’s victory, the final fight was called. The party prepared in the stands as Psaro walked onto the arena floor.   “Are you the real dragon-children then? Are those left in my keep just copies?”   Psaro, the Manslayer, called out to the Zenethian Children in the stands. He knew they were here, and he wished to talk. Psaro had sowed the discord in Endor and lied to King Thorik, for he wished the world to burn. The children had trespassed on Rose’s Island and slain one of his generals, the mind flayer, but he had their duplicates, their friends. He offered a trade, their blood for their lives. The party declined, and cursed their enemy, and Psaro laughed.   “With the power of a god, I can punish those who have wronged me.”   He summoned great fireballs above the arena and sent them crashing down into the stands. The civilians panicked and fled and the arena was destroyed as Psaro laughed. When the dust settled and the flames died out, the form of Psaro lay burned and dead. It was a doppelganger that had been sent by Psaro. King Thorik finally understood he had been deceived and declared war on Psaro for attacking his people. He promised full aid to Branca and ordered his armies make ready.   The passageway through the Gimora Mountains, the Endor Tunnel, was blocked and needed to be cleared for the King’s army to march forth. His scouting parties had not returned, so King Thorik ordered his two champions, Johanna and Aoth, to clear the way, and the party volunteered to help.   They rode out to the tunnel to find the great mountain passage blocked by a rockfall. It seemed like sabotage, and nearby they found beasts working in the caverns. Leo’s pathfinding spell directed him one way, but the dark voice in Rath’s head turned him another. He left party in this direction, and when Joseppe confronted him, he was frozen in place by a divine force from Rath.   The beasts were working in a great spell circle, loosing the blood from the dwarf bodies of the slain scouting parties. The party engaged them, and the dark voice inside Rath directed him to alter the runes of the spell. He etched a new symbol and everyone felt a shift in the magic. What had been drawing energy towards the east instead shifted west.   With the spell shifted and the dark force satisfied, Rath lost control of his body as the entity revealed itself as an aspect of Esturk. When the party rushed to help Rath, he plunged his sword into the chest of Trip. Her blood was spilled on the spell circle below, and her soul was pulled from her body. As she fell, the party heard rapid galloping. Chedae rushed into the cavern and leapt, landing bodily into Rath. As she connected, a holy energy burst out, and the dark force in Rath was expelled from him into the cavern. A tentacled beast lashed out, and the party slew it, removing its taint from Rath.   Though the taint of Esturk had been removed from Rath, the body of Trip still lay on the ground. She could not be revived and magic cast to call her soul back failed. The party completed their work to clear the blocked tunnel pathway, held Rath in a moving cage of bones, and the Zenethian Children carried the body of their sister back towards Endor.   Upon their return, the King’s army was marching forth to aid Branca. They brought Rath before the King who used his truth seeker axe and the party learned it was not his actions that slew Trip, but he did nothing to prevent it either. Disappointed and angry with Rath, but with greater evils ahead of them, they released Rath back to their party. King Oathenhammer volunteered his clerics to watch over Trip’s body, so that should her soul be saved, she could be returned to life. They left her body in the care of them. Brigitte left Fifi to guard her and took Trip’s Zenethian Swords.   Now they faced a choice: should they face Esturk, their destined enemy and slayer of Trip, or should they face Psaro, the one who destroyed their home and holds their friends captive? They choose to focus on gathering the last Zenethian Item and face the forces of Esturk before he could fully rise, as he was the true threat to the world. Resolute, they boarded Leo’s ship and headed towards where Sanazi had last been seen in Santeem.

Arc 8: Towards Esturk, The World's End

On the way across the sea, they found the wreckage of several ships on the waves. There was one survivor, a half-elven pirate woman. When the party rescued her from the surf, she introduced herself as Petra D'Silva, a pirate captain whose ship, and the ship she’d been chasing, had been sundered by a huge sea creature. With no ship of her own, Petra offered to help the party in exchange for safe passage. She warned the party that the sea creature still lurked nearby, but they continued onwards despite the warning.   Later on, a flock of harpies attacked the ship and crew. The party mobilized and fought them off, however the fighting alerted a great leviathan who attacked the vessel. Using the ship’s cannons, they fired back. Joseppe and Ivan formed a magical wall of iron suspended above the creature and dropped the mass onto it, and though Aoth was temporarily swallowed, they repelled the creature and slew the harpies and continued sailing on.   The ship landed on the southern coast of Santeem, on the edge of the Flat Peaks Desert. The peninsula was a heated mass of lava flows coming from a singular metal structure: Birdsong Tower. The solid doorway of the tower melted at Brigitte’s touch and the interior had piles of dust. Ascending the tower, they found a metal platform over a pool of magma in front of a great clock.   Elementals and fire lizards fought the party. Petra was killed but quickly revived by Leo. When the mechanism of the clock was activated incorrectly forward, the room reset in time. Trying again, they completed the actions in the correct order, turning the clock backwards, and Brigitte used her gift, a golden locket, and pressed it into the surface of the clock. As she did, a vortex opened beneath her, and she disappeared through it.   “Brigitte. When the time comes, name her Brigitte.”   For Brigitte, she fell softly to the bottom of the tower. As she descended, she watched two figures conversing, and as they became clearer, Brigitte saw they were Sanazi and Rita, two of the Champions, and Brigitte knew she was travelling through time. Sanazi said goodbye to Rita, and Rita cast a spell and sealed the metal door. When Brigitte materialized, Sanazi welcomed her. She had been expecting her. She had chosen this as her test for her child, and the room would only open when one of them were slain. Though she did not wish to fight her mother, Brigitte was given no choice. They battled while Sanazi encouraged her daughter until the end, and in the last, Sanazi gifted her daughter her armor and wished her success in the coming fight.   “Let Ruin set fire to the deserts of my people, and let Angioletta play in the stone. For you Brigitte, for MY daughter, for MY kin, I will see your worth with my eyes and my blade.”   Brigitte returned as the time ritual spell that had been set by Rita completed. For the party, she was only gone a moment. With her return, all the Zenethian Items had been regathered. With a surge of holy energy emanating from each item, the party were whisked away in emerald light.   They returned to the Eternity Stair and stood once more before Zenthai, The Dragon King. He congratulated the children for gathering the artifacts of their parents and thanked the others for their aid. Zenthai asked for the Zenethian Items so they could be reforged. Then, from Leo, Aoth, Johanna, and Petra, he asked for their weapons as well.   With a breath, Zenthai recast the items into new crystalline forms. Each took the form best suited for its new wielder, and with his energy they were once more recharged and glowing with holy light. The Zenethian Cloak, Armor, Hook and Chain, Bow, Staff, Greatsword, Scythe, Dagger, and Sabre were created. With these gifts, he named them the Zenethian Heroes, the ones with the power to defeat Esturk, The World’s End, and save Azimuth once more.   “Now, these items shine with YOUR light.”   Zenthai returned his Heroes to the Material Plane reenergized and with newfound power. With their task ahead of them, they quickly returned to their ship and set sail for Tarteria, where Esturk stirred.   The party landed and headed towards the Orichalcum Peninsula where they had learned miners from Aktempto had encountered demons in the darkness. Miasma permeated the hills and toxic waters spread throughout the area, and constant storm clouds roiled constantly towards Aktempto. Not knowing what lay ahead of them, Aoth and Petra scouted the settlement. They found desecrated memorials to Morazar and Porgorag and the entrance to the mines was infested with demons. Suddenly, Aoth shot an arrow and alerted the demons to them. The demons could outpace them and both could not flee. Aoth left Petra at the mines as a distraction so he could run back to the rest of the party.   While Petra was alone with the demons, the rest of the party determined what options they had. They could not leave a member of their party to such a fate and rushed to save her. But as they went forward to save her, Chedae would not move with them. No matter their attempts to bring her, Chedae stood firm and would not approach the mines. Leaving their donkey behind, the party moved deeper in. But what they found were placid demons led by a snarling and mocking Glabrezu. Petra had promised the Heroes as sacrifice to them in exchange for her own life. Betrayed, the party confronted Petra, and while her words confirmed what the demon said, she signed to Leo in semaphore, captain to captain, the truth. She had convinced the demons to bring them to Esturk directly. They could bypass them and cut straight to the heart. Leo understood and urged the other heroes on. Trusting the plan from the two, the Heroes were led deep into the mines of Aktempto. The area changed deeper and deeper in until they felt they must have traversed beyond the world of Azimuth.   In a spherical opening deep beneath the world, the party approached a precipice over endless darkness. Then, a rumbling of grinding wingbeats rose to them. The World’s End took flight in this space to meet them, and he regarded the Heroes arranged against him. As the party tensed and prepared, a new sound came from above. Tunnelling through the dark and earth, Zenthai forced his way into this space between worlds to face his rival. Esturk laughed and summoned three Dark Champions of his own, stolen souls from Zenethia: The Champions, Morazar and Porgorag; and the Child of Prophecy, Trip.   “You look tired, Zenthai! And you have more holy warriors this time. Frightened?”   Zenthai warned the Heroes that Esturk, having abused the Power of Evolution and stolen the ritual magic from Psaro, stood stronger now than he had ever before, even not yet fully arisen. Zenthai would buy them time to deal with Esturk’s Dark Champions, and then they would have to think of something to drain the stolen energy from him. Rushing to the air the Dragons clashed and intertwined in the air, tumbling into the dark.   The champions fought a bloody battle. Porgorag and Morazar called out as they could to try to aid them, but they were not in control of their body’s’ actions. Joseppe fell immediately and was revived in the battle. During the melee, Esturk invaded their minds in turn and offered them dark rewards and the power to save their stolen friends and slay Psaro. They shook off these temptations and steeled their resolve. Eventually Morazar was felled, then Porgorag. Lastly, Rath defeated Trip and rescued her soul.   “You… cannot… beat THIS POWER!”
“Power itself is not to be feared. Fear those who know how to wield it!”
The battle above went poorly for Zenthai. Alone and still wounded, he had not the strength to hold back Esturk indefinitely. He could not defeat him, but he could make it so his children might. Latching onto Esturk, Zenthai pulled a shining rainbow crystal from The World’s End, and as the dark Dragon screeched, the power exploded, sending Zenthai crashing into the battlefield below. Esturk flew down and landed heavily on the mortally wounded Zenthai. And with a final attack, Esturk killed The Dragon King.   “Now the time of Zenethia is finished! The Age of Nadiria will consume this world!”   The body of Zenthai scattered into lights that spread through the cavern and coalesced upon each of the Heroes. Emerald light infused them all, as Zenthai touched each of those who stood witness to his fall. With his touch each were granted Zenthai's Blessing, and the strength of resolve to face this fight once more filled them.   Though Johanna, Ivan, and Brigitte fell in the fighting, the party kept struggling against Esturk. As they ground him down, he became more crazed and more desperate. In a swarm of spells and arrows and weapons, the Zenethian Heroes fought back against the darkness, and with a final blow, they sent Esturk, defeated, back into the darkness, back into slumber once more. They revived and recovered themselves, and as they left this place, they sealed the entrance behind them with an explosion. The demons were gone and the mines were empty as they ascended back to Azimuth.   “I am the God of Death. The God of the Transition. I have been waiting for you for a long time now.”   In a space between worlds, the soul of Trip floated endlessly. A figure coalesced and formed in front of her. He introduced himself as Nerull, The Scythe-Bearer, and welcomed her to his plane. He said her fate was hers to choose. He offered to lead her to the realm of Zenethia where her fighting would be forever done, and also spoke of her family and friends who had fought so hard to save her. Should she wish, Nerull would lead Trip back to Azimuth, though it would take a great amount time to reach. Trip decided that if her family needed her, then she would go them, and moved into Nerull’s embrace.   When the Heroes emerged from the tunnels, they were met with the sun breaking through the storm above Tarteria, and their donkey approached in earnest. As Chedae came to them, she glowed with a similar energy to that which had infused themselves and their items. As the last energy faded from her, she transformed. No more was she the color-changing donkey that had journeyed with them from the start. Her true form was revealed, a young platinum-scaled Dragon. Zenthai had worried that he would be killed, and so he had a daughter and hid her away on Azimuth so that if he were slain, Zenethia could continue. Chedae revealed herself to the party as Zenthai’s divine magic faded.   “I am Chedae, daughter of Zenthai, and I have waited a very long time to say that to you all.”   Esturk was defeated once more, but Psaro still threatened the world. With the armies he had gathered he could still bring about the end of the kingdoms. The armies they had contacted were gathering in Branca to prepare for battle, and the Heroes would go to aid them. Returning to Leo’s ship, they sailed towards the Endor port and marched quickly towards Branca.

Arc 9: Towards Parthenia and Psaro

The armies had camped around the captial. King Brancana had arranged a war council for the leaders to discuss their strategy against Psaro. The Heroes attended and provided what information they could about Psaro and his plans. The armies of Branca, Burland, and Endor were readied. While Keeleon only had a handful of orcs and no forces from Santeem were there, Konenbur and the elves of Soretta sent their armies and delegates as well. Their forces were holding the bestial fleets in the south and would push an advance to draw Psaro’s armies away while Branca led a direct attack on Parthenia.   The armies set out for the eastern coast to board the gathered vessels, but they did not yet know what they were getting into. The Heroes could scout using their Wind Walk spell and see what defenses Parthenia had. They transformed into wind and flew across the sea towards Parthenia. When they got to the border, they found an anti-magic barrier around the island that repelled intrusion. They found where the enemy fleet was holding and went to turn back, however Petra split from the party. Without the means to end the spell and not endanger all of them, they had no way to prevent Petra from leaving them, heading towards the beasts. Thinking themselves betrayed, the party returned towards the gathering forces.   Petra went to the leading ship of the beasts. There, she presented herself to the minotaur captain of the vessel, Black Phillip. Petra said she was a dissenter and wished to help Psaro win the war; all she wanted was her own ship. Black Phillip did not believe her, but offered her a chance to prove her resolve. He presented a dagger to her, and to prove herself, she took her own eye. The minotaur allowed her onboard and threw her to the under decks as part of the crew of the Falcon, the lead ship of a squadron headed to intercept a human fleet in the north. There she met a gnoll named Ringer . The gnolls were being forced to work under the minotaurs and were unhappy with their lot, and Petra convinced them to mutiny. The gnolls threw off the minotaurs and the Falcon was theirs.   The squadron was about to engage the Burland fleet. Petra raised a flag with the Zenethian symbol on it, and the Falcon surprised the other beast vessels, sinking them in cannon fire. Petra approached the Burland flagship and explained her plan. Turning around and headed east, the Falcon led the Burland fleet towards Psaro’s.   During this time, the rest of the Heroes had returned to the allied fleet. Leo’s ship was still in Endor, so they joined the forces on Branca’s flagship, the Occidentalis, with King Brancana. Paired with them was the elven warship, the Effervescent. Chedae took to the skies and the fleet set sail and headed towards Parthenia.   “We fight with Zenethia on our side! Our god fights with us today!”   In the Parthenian Sea, the allied fleet met the bulk of Psaro’s navy. The Effervescent was sunk and the Occidentalis was boarded, and Chedae was forced away as she aided the fleet, but the Heroes fought their way to victory and into the Parthenian Bay. As they did, a fleet of vessels burst through the fog and flanked the beasts: The Falcon had brought the Burland fleet to aid them and many bestial ships were sunk. Breaking through, the Falcon and the Occidentalis landed on the shores of the Iron Marshes. The rest of the fleet would secure the bay and prepare to face Psaro’s armies, and Ringer and his gnolls would do what they could to deter the gnollish forces in Psaro’s army. King Brancana and Ringer joined them as they made for the ruins of the city of Gardenbur.   The ruins of Gardenbur were a tainted place that were permeated with evil energy. In the ruins of the captial, they rested in a dilapidated temple. Inside, a spirit assaulted the party and King Brancana was wounded, and the darkness leached into the wound. The spirit was banished, but the King could no longer continue with them. King Brancana ordered the Heroes to head to where Psaro was hidden: in the northern fortress, the Citadel of Bronze.   “Cut the head from the snake.”   They used their Wind Walk spell to traverse the Muddy Peaks and the Fields of Minos, rapidly approaching the Citadel of Bronze while Psaro’s armies marched towards the coast to face the allied invasion. Psaro’s fortress was a structure of metal and towers along the northern stretches of the country. With their gaseous forms, they snuck inside. As they travelled through the lush and gilded interior, they approached the throne room. It was blocked by a wall of magic with no other way around. Being careful of what trap this may be, they entered though the barrier. Each party member was assaulted with illusions from their journey that tested their resolve. They refaced old enemies and confronted their failures across Azimuth. They were shaken by this, but recommitted to stopping Psaro.   As they made it through the barrier and entered the throne room, they heard clapping; Psaro congratulated them and welcomed them before him. Immediately the Heroes prepared for a fight, but Psaro cautioned them. In the rafters of the cathedral-like room were the taken friends of the Zenethian Children, chained and rigged to fall to their death at Psaro’s whim.   Psaro offered them their friends and their lives. All he asked for was their blood so he could perfect his use of the Power of Evolution. For the death of his love, Rose, he would bring death and destruction on the kingdoms of men and elves and dwarves, but if they aided him, Psaro would spare all their lives. He had travelled to Tarteria and spoke with Esturk as he slumbered, but the god laughed him away even though Psaro had woken him earlier than fate would decree. Now he would use Evolution to do the job himself, and he needed the blood of a god. The blood of the Children. They refused. With a snap, Psaro summoned music and his minotaur general, Black Phillip, and Psaro drew his sword.   “The gods are weak, and yours is dead. Now you shall be too.”   Joseppe fell immediately as Psaro reflected a spell he cast, and the party engaged. During the fighting, Psaro let the hanging prisoners fall one at a time. Petra and Brigitte worked to save two of those captured, Cher and Gertrude, before Psaro could drop them. During this, Rath and Johanna dueled Psaro and Black Philip.   Johanna was overpowered and was slain by the minotaur, but Leo quickly expended his death magic to bring her back, and with her greatsword, she slew Black Phillip in turn. Rath stabbed Psaro through the torso to the hilt. Psaro laughed, raised his sword charged with magic, and sunk it into his own chest. An imperfect version of the Power of Evolution was cast and Psaro was transfigured into an abomination instead of the demigod he aimed to become. His figure twisted to a mass of mismatched appendages and tentacles and he mindlessly engaged the full party.   With arrow and spell and blade, the Heroes pummeled damage into the Manslayer. Though his increased strength and ferocity threatened their lives, eventually they saw the incomplete magic dissipate. The aberration energy leaked from him along with his lifeblood, and in his citadel, Psaro the Manslayer was killed.   “Rose… I would have killed… them all... for you, my Rose…”   With Psaro gone, the magic that surrounded Parthenia destabilized and great shards of the anti-magic barrier began falling from the sky. The Citadel of Bronze shuddered and crumbled around them and the Heroes had to make their escape. As the throne room collapsed, Johanna hefted her blade and decapitated Black Phillip, claiming his head as a trophy. As they ran towards the citadel’s entrance, a crumbling staircase fell towards Brigitte, but Leo summoned a giant skeleton that held it for a moment just long enough for her to get away. At last, the barricaded door was all that remained and Petra cast her last spell to blow the door outward and they escaped the crumbling structure. They took cover underground while the shards of magic impacted the earth and shattered to mist back to the ether.   As the Heroes returned, they found the allied armies had won the battle in the Iron Marshes. The gnolls had abandoned the field, leaving the minotaurs to face them alone. Though there were fatalities and injuries, the allies had won and Psaro was defeated.   With the Dragon, Chedae, present and with the Zenethian Heroes the victors against both Esturk and Psaro, the world was saved once more. When they returned to Endor, they found that Trip had recovered, and they introduced her to Chedae. All that was left was the aftereffects of the wars. The Heroes worked to aid the recovery and rebuilding of those displaced and wounded, and with the aid of Chedae in her material form, they accomplished great things at the end of the Age.   “This is such a pretty place. I’m glad I am able to see it with my own eyes.”   After a time, Chedae summoned the Heroes back to the home town where the Zenethian Children had started. There, she said her goodbyes, for she had to return to Zenethia to take the mantle of her father in full. She hugged each of them and wished them well, and then flew into the sky and left this plane to the divine realm.   Thus ended the Age of Shadow, and so began the Age of Beginnings.   “And that’s that.”
