Arkis

Rexlas:
Arkis (rexíska)

Arkis is the capital of Resak, an empire that rules much of the northern continent of Laxilþía. Located at the mouth of Velx River and surrounded by the Kalis Swamp, the city is a major center of commerce in the empire, with near constant stream of goods and people coming from the sea, downriver or along the roads that connect it to the other provinces. The main mode of transportation is by canoes through the network of canals that connect different parts of the city, with bridges and often narrow streets being secondary in importance.

Demographics

The city is home to people from all over the empire and beyond, though native Rexans are the most prominent ones.

Defences

The city lacks defensive walls, instead the inhabitants have long relied on letting the difficult terrain surrounding the city and dangerous wildlife take care of any invaders approaching on land. Arkis is not entirely defenseless however, as a number of watchtowers are found all over the city, and certain sections can be blocked off via drawbridges and sluice gates in case of emergency.

Infrastructure

The city boasts of a number of beautiful temples, mansions, gardens and ceremonial plazas, as well as markets (both floating and on dry land) and amphitheaters. The palace and some of the oldest (and most prestigious) temples are located on Akkí Hill, overlooking the city, while on the outskirts are artificial islands used for fields, orchards and vineyards.
Three main roads connect Arkis to the other provinces by land, one to the wine-growing regions to the south, another to the lands around Noron River to the east, and a third to the area around Katark Mountains to the north.

Architecture

Most of the Arkis' structures are built atop stone foundations to prevent them from sinking into the soft soil, temples and other important buildings often stand on raised platforms as well to make them more visible. The city is densely populated, with most of its inhabitants living in apartment buildings of varying quality, often with flat roofs used for all sorts of activities, including weaving and cooking, without having to deal with the stuffy air inside. Gardens are used for the same purposes in manors.
Stone is the material of choice, with both inner and outer walls plastered and often painted in bright colours. Manors are often decorated with frescoes, gold and mosaic floors as well.
