The Trail of the Breaker's Flame is a secretive initiation ceremony exclusively for the members of a brotherhood faction known as the Scalebreakers. During this ritual, the initiate is required to sacrifice their own dragonkin companion, or if they don't have one of their own, a wild one.   This serves as a testament to their readiness to join the ranks of the Scalebreakers. The faction comprises highly skilled individuals dedicated to the task of neutralizing dragonkin, and the initiation ritual is designed to demonstrate the initiate's capability to do so. It is customary for this ceremony to take place at the peaceful hour of sunset, adding to the mystique and solemnity of the occasion.   The ritual's name carries subtle significance, representing the Scalebreaker initiate's ability to harness their inner strength and willpower, and to maintain their own flame and spirit without relying on dragonkin. It also signifies the initiate's capability to execute challenging assignments upon command.

History

The initiation ritual was not established until after the Draconian War, a conflict that led to the development of a fundamental belief that dragonkin pose a threat to humanity. The individuals who founded the brotherhood, and later the Dragonguard Alliance , did not undergo this ritual. However, through their collective efforts in neutralizing dragonkin threats over the years, they have effectively fulfilled the requirements of the ritual retroactively.

Execution

The dragonkin are blindfolded to maintain secrecy about the upcoming events. An initiate will lead them to a designated location, where they will be met by other members. One of the leaders will hand the initiate a knife, where they then drive it into the back of the dragonkin's neck, severing the spine and killing it almost instantly.   The anatomy of dragonkin makes it difficult to pierce their hearts with a knife due to the protective scales or scutes on their underside. However, a vulnerable spot often exists at the base of their head, making it a more feasible to neutralize. The severing of the spine not only incapacitates the dragonkin, but also prevents it from carrying out any final actions it might have been able to execute if it had been struck in the heart.

Participants

At the ritual, all five leaders gather along with three skilled Scalebreakers, an initiate, and a dragonkin. The leaders are present to officiate the ritual, while the trained Scalebreakers are there to act as both guards and to provide assistance in case of any unforeseen complications.
