Icewyrm

Icewyrm is a species of Borewyrm that specializes in borrowing into ice and even hard permafrost. Like all borewyrms, they feature a specialized horn on their heads and a sturdy, toughened layer of scaleplates covering their bodies. Icewyrms possess a unique adaptation - they can generate heat through their horn, which effectively melts surrounding ice and permafrost. This ability allows them to create burrows more easily, providing a competitive advantage in their icy habitat.   Borewyrms have the ability to manipulate the outer scaleplates, utilizing some of them for assistance in locomotion and burrowing, aiding in anchoring the wyrm and compressing the ground to stabilize the hole. This intricate use of scaleplates enables borewyrms to create and maintain their habitat with impressive efficiency. Icewyrms have small claw-like structures present on the majority of their scaleplates. These claws provide them with enhanced anchoring and grip, aiding in their ability to bore through or maneuver on ice with ease.   The borewyrm's protection is attributed to the toughened scaleplates that cover its body, providing a defense against potential threats or attacks. Beyond its primary function, the thermal horn of the icewyrm can be effectively utilized as a defensive weapon, allowing it to protect itself from potential threats as well.   Icewyrms are only found in Frostcrest and in the far northern region of Emberland.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Like all borewyrms, they are serpent-like creatures similar to dragons, but without legs or wings. Icewyrms are characterized by their toughened hard platescales and a specialized horn, which can generate heat to melt ice and permafrost.   Icewyrms have small claw-like structures present on the majority of their scaleplates. These claws provide them with enhanced anchoring and grip, aiding in their ability to bore through or maneuver on ice with ease. These creatures are formidable due to their powerful physical features and their ability to navigate through icy terrains.

Ecology and Habitats

The natural habitat of icewyrms is in frozen subterranean environments, where they are commonly found excavating intricate networks of tunnels and chambers beneath the earth and ice. These elusive creatures are known to create their own underground dwelling by burrowing into the permafrost, utilizing their specialized horns and strong, muscular bodies to carve out elaborate passages. In addition to their subterranean burrows, icewyrms are also found to inhabit caves, where they continue to display their adept digging and carving abilities, shaping the rocky surroundings to suit their needs.   Furthermore, in contrast to earthwyrms, icewyrms possess the ability to navigate through water, which enables them to tunnel into icebergs located in open bodies of water.

Biological Cycle

Borewyrms, unlike other dragonkin, have a unique feature where the scaleplates on its body only shed once during its lifetime and do not regenerate. This shedding process, known as scaleplate exfoliation, is a critical part of the borewyrm's life cycle.   If an icewyrm produces excessive heat in its horn, the horn can sustain damage, leading to decreased effectiveness in burrowing through ice. Continuous overheating may result in complete damage to the horn, causing it to fall off. This occurrence is more likely in cases where the icewyrm resides in climates that are warmer than its natural habitat.
