Personal history
Early Life
Clint Barton grew up Waverly, Iowa, where his father owned a butcher's shop. He had one older brother, Barney. Barton lost his hearing as a child due to head trauma, and relied on sign language, with Barney acting as his interpretter. His father was an alcoholic, and he and their mother were killed in a car accident because Harold was driving drunk.
Following the deaths of their parents, the brothers were placed in a number of foster homes, but eventually ran away to join the circus when Barton was a young teenager, initially as roustabouts, but Jacques Duquesne later took them under his wing and trained them in trick shooting. When Barton discovered Duquesne was embezzling money from the circus, he beat Barton badly, leaving him for dead. Barney witnessed this attack but chose not to intervene, leaving with the Circus.
Joining S.H.I.E.L.D.
Barton found work with a carnival, and it was during this time that he met and fell in love with Laura Barton. His decision to use his marksmanship skills as a vigilante put him on SHIELD's radar. When SHIELD offered him a job, he agreed only on the condition that Laura be protected. SHIELD set the couple up with a safehouse in Missouri, which Laura opperated as a small farm. The couple eventually had two children, Lila and Cooper.
Following his recruitment, SHIELD offered Barton the option of surgery to repair his damaged hearing, which he accepted, although the doctors warned that this might be a temporary fix as the damage was severe and the repairs might deteriorate over time or if he suffered a subsequent head trauma.
During this time, Barton was sent to assasinate Natasha Romanoff, but recognising that her loyalty to the KGB had wained, instead made the choice to recruit her, leading to the two becoming best friends.
The odd arrangement and Barton's long absences put a strain on his relationship with Laura, and the two eventually decided to sepperate. The sepperation was largely amicable, and Barton continued to visit the farm regularly as he could not have the children stay with him in SHIELD housing.
Around two years after the sepperation, Barton began a casual relationship with fellow SHIELD agent Bobbi Morse.
Meeting Tony Stark
After Tony Stark revealed to Nick Fury that he knew about the Avengers Initiative, and made contact with Romanoff, Fury sent Barton undercover at Stark Industries to observe Stark's behaviour, as he was concerned he was acting erratically.
Due to his memories of the original timeline, Stark immediately recognised Barton, but insisted he had no problem with Barton spying on him.
When Justin Hammer sent mercenaries to steal Stark's Arc Reactor, Barton assisted him in fighting them off. During the attack on the Stark Expo, Barton, assisted by Happy Hogan, broke into Hammer Industries in order to return control of the War Machine Armour to James Rhodes who had been trapped inside it by Hammer.
In the aftermarth of Stark and Rhodes's defeat of Hammer, Barton was sent by SHIELD to Puente Antiguo, New Mexico, where an alien artefact had appeared in the desert. Barton was present at the facility when Thor was detained and questioned by Agent Coulson after he broke in in an attempt to reclaim Mjøllnir.
He joined the battle against the Destroyer, fighting alongside Thor, Stark, Siff and the Warriors Three.
When Stark heard that the Hulk was battling the Abomination in Harlem, Stark took Barton with him to represent SHIELD. Barton was able to prevent General Ross from claiming either Bruce Banner or Betty Ross by taking them both into SHIELD custody (although Betty Ross chose to leave, and Barton did not attempt to stop her).
Chitauri Invasion
On the night Stark knew Loki would attack the Joint Dark Energy Mission Facility, he persuaded Barton to switch his shift with a colleague and come out drinking with Stark and Steve Rogers. Barton asked his girlfriend Bobbi Morse to switch shifts with him.
When Morse was co-opted by Loki, Barton blamed himself, and insisted on being included in the mission to capture Loki in Stutgart. They suceeded in capturing Loki, but Bobbi and Selvig were not with him.
On the Hellicarrier, Barton assisted Banner in his study of the Sceptre until the Hellicarrier was attacked by Morse and the other enthralled SHIELD agents. Going to investigate the noise, Barton encountered Morse and the two fought. Realising that it would not be able to talk her out of Loki's control, Barton instead knocked her out, hoping that the blow to the head would shake Loki's control.
When Morse awoke, Barton apologised to her for asking her to take his shift, although Morse reassured him that it was not his fault.
The Avengers meet in New York to battle Loki's Chitauri army. Stark gave Barton a lift up to the top of an office block, from where he took out Chitauri gliders, and even succeeded in grounding Loki. Working together, the Avengers were able to capture Loki and close the portal, which killed the remaining Chitauri invaders by cutting off their connection to the Mothership.
Los Angeles
While Bruce Banner was in Los Angeles, visiting a colleague at UCLA, he encountered a group of superheroes called the Alliance, who he believed to be suspicious. Barton, recognising one of the Alliance as his estranged brother Barney Barton, immediately flew out to LA to assist Banner in his investigation.
Working together they tracked the Alliance back to their headquarters, and discovered that the head of the team was Samuel Sterns, who was dying of radiation poisoning as a result of exposure to Banner's blood.
Barton accompanied Banner to Nome, Alaska, to recruit Betty Ross, whose expertise Banner needed in order to save Sterns. Barton is injured retrieving her, which gives Banner the idea of bringing in Helen Cho, a Korean engineer whose work Tony Stark had been funding. Using her Regeneration Cradle, she was able to heal Barton.
While Cho, Ross, and Banner worked in the lab, Barton accompanied the Alliance on their patrols, and began to repair his relationship with his brother.
Banner and Ross succeeded in stabalising Sterns by mutating him into a full Gamma Mutate, and began preparing to leave. Barton agreed to do one last mission with the Alliance before leaving for New York City.
During this final mission, he noticed the Alliance leaving cases behind at some of the places they rescued people. When he investigated one of the cases, he found it contains a bomb, wired to vials of Gamma mutagen, but he was caught by the Alliance before he could allert anyone. Barney insisted that he should be the one to kill his brother, but deliberate stabbed him non-fatally, believing this made up for his leaving Barton for dead in the Circus.
Banner was able to locate Barton before he bled to death, and healed him using the Regeneration Cradle. They figure out Sterns's plan, and work out the locations of the bombs.
While the scientists and students at UCLA worked to manufacture enough cure to distribute around the city, Barton returned to the city to try and protect people. To his surprise, the Alliance return to help him, as they had not known Sterns intended to expose the entire city to the mutagen.
When the cure was ready, Barton took one of the aerosolisers, attaching it to his Quinjet in order to cover as much of the city as possible.
A group of citizens who Sterns deliberately exposed to the liquid, rather than airborne, form of the mutagen mutate into the Horde, a massive gestalt being. Realising someone needed to inject the cure directly into Horde, Barney volunteered, finally apologising the Barton for siding with Duquesne when they were teenagers before risking his life.
Barney survived, and once Sterns was in custody and the citizens of LA cured, Barton accepted his apology before he and the rest of the Alliance were taken into custody.
Barton and Banner had begun to develope feelings for one other while working together, but recognising that Banner was not ready to pursue any romantic relationship, Barton reassured him that they could just be friends.
